Want to play a space sim...not eve! Suggestions please.

Can't wait for the new X universe game. They have a freaking huge learning curve though, but really rewarding once you get on top of it.

Star Trek Online is free, so would definitely be worth a try.

Not really a 'sim' but modded Freespace 2 is easily the best I've played for combat, controls and storyline. Truly amazing feeling dogfighting for your life and then in comes a massive cruiser with beam cannons to save your bacon (just the sound of them warming up has me jizzing my pants). Definitely superior than Freelancer in those regards, although you'll have to live without trading.

In fact I'd say for a 90s game, FS2 is arguably as close to perfect as any game from that era. Everything just feels right, the controls are complex yet intuitive, the mission briefing voiceovers give you goosepimples, you feel like part of something bigger than just a lonely one-man-band existance that many games feel (squad communications etc)....

***, you need a joystick though.

It's a tutorial vid on how to get going in the game! It's one of the very first things he suggests doing - map out sectors. It's all well and good saying you can get a ship to do it for you later on, but it's obviously not the best tutorial if it bores you sensless after 5 minutes.

Someone just starting isn't going to have a clue how to get a ship to do it for them.

I believe it's based on the Freespace SCP engine so we already know what that's capable of although it does looks like they're getting more out of it. The playable demo for BTRL was definitely promising on the gameplay front. It had that Battlestar feel thanks to the voice acting and they also had the sound of the radio chatter right. I'm just glad to see what looks like possible Trackir support in there. That would be extremely welcome.
