Want to play a space sim...not eve! Suggestions please.

Freespace 2 definitely hasn't been beaten as far as combat goes. You can grab it on GOG for next to nothing now too and the Freespace Open project makes it look pretty good.
I'm really hoping that a decent fully fledged sim comes along soon since X3 is such a bland game. Don't get me wrong, I love games with depth, but it doesn't need to feel so sterile =(

I cant beleive nobody has mentioned the First encounters remake by David Braben and Ian bell,i thought this forum was full of hardcore gamers...?I wouldnt even consider playing anything else, only space sim i know of that you can land on any planet.

While it had a lot of things going for it the bugs were terrible.
Even with a completely clean record and not having ****ed anyone off or gotten the alien/memorial ship you could jump into the safest systems in the universe and be attacked by so many ships it would be impossible to get anywhere and dock.
Random crashes and general mission bugs making things impossible to complete etc.

I like the game and still break it out now and then but it wasn't a finished product. I still wish someone would bring out a space trader sim with newtonian physics and the ability to land and take off from planets like you could in elite 2/frontier without going through a loading screen and magically landing on a planet.
I understand that would be difficult with how demanding people are of todays graphical standards but i'm sure it could still be done, just not look as good as X3

Space Pirates and Zombies

co-op
Moonbase Alpha

I never finished Freelancer. Got stuck many moons ago. Is it still worth playing? Are there any mods? And is there anything similar to it? (no thread hijack) :)

i enjoyed it, and have tryed to get back to it but finding it a bit hard to get back the rythume. it did get a bit repetative i found towards the end. buts its been so long since i finsihed though.i think my only problem with the games was the turret mode didn't alow you to control the ship and turrest separatley.. after the main games finishes their wasn;t really a lot to do i found

Pfft. Not too hardcore yourself! I can think of several space sims off the top of my head that allow you to land on any planet. Most notably, Evochron Mercenary. :p

More seriously, at first I didn't think there were many hardcore gamers on this forum either, dominated as it is by threads about Generic Shooter 5 Extreme! However, we are here. ;)

Apologies mate, when i read your post I saw remake and thought you meant glFFE the openGL version, which i tried and while making it prettier and higher resolution still had the bugs.
This D3D version may still have the same bugs but I'll happily give it a whirl now that i know about it. the links in the thread are dead, do you know where i can get the latest version?
