I'd like to give this a go but i don't think it will be my sort of game as i prefer arcadey shooters like Cod / XDefiant (R.I.P) to Battlefield style games. Am I right in thinking the only way to play it is by paying full price (currently £36 on steam), or given that it's early access is it possible to have some kind of free (or close to free) trial?

There’s no free trail but it can be had for 26 on Loaded. But if you prefer COD style shooters this almost certainly won’t be for you.
You could buy it on steam and try a coupe of games, you’ve got a 2 hour refund window with steam. Don’t like it, refund. Do like it, refund and buy on loaded for a tenner less.
There’s a rebuy option that helps a bit with the faff. It also looks like quick-buy loadout options are in the pipeline.

Last time I had this much fun on a FPS game was during the COD2 days, what a great game this is.

It's good fun but some matches have all of your team camping the tower and the enemy staying in theirs and I'm not sure what to do in that situation apart from spotting. I've not unlocked most of the good stuff yet so I suppose more options open up the more I unlock.
17 hours put into this since Thursday and 12 hours on playtests.
Safe to say this is without doubt the best fps ive played since BF2/3 possibly even better than both of them but they are the barometer im using.
Arma games are great but i never got a polished experience but such is the nature or ARMA games, dont get me wrong i really enjoyed ARMA reforger King of the hill while is basically the mode in WARDOGS but never as polished as this is.

Loads of servers no issue getting into a game within seconds
Not had an issue since the first night, straight in every time.

I've solved the problem of running out of money after upgrades, go with no loadout and scavenge the dead in the circle for a free kit
No issues at all now.
Go cheaper, you’ll love it.
