Warframe Free to play shooter

A few thoughts from me and the 3 people i play with and the warframes/guns we have tried out.

Warframes
Excalibur - I started with this one, great starting frame. The charge ability is fun and very powerful, the ult ability (4th one) is OK but needs line of site to hit so doesn't demolish as much as...
Mag - Friend started with this, possibly a little more of a team player than Excalibur. Has a devastating ult which when upgraded can kill everything in a room, even without LoS.
No-one started with Loki so can't comment on him.

We are all working towards more team based Warframes, we decided on:
Frost - Working towards this, hopefully will be the tank of the team with great shields/health/armor. Also has an ability very useful for defence missions where he can make an invulnerability bubble.
Nyx - Great for crowd control and defence missions, can make a whole room kill each other.
Trinity - The "god frame" of team play. Can keep every person in a team with constantly high energy and health, amazing for bosses.

Friends have also bought Saryn and Ember but weren't hugely impressed with them.

For guns at the moment pistols are king. At the start all guns are fairly good, possibly shotguns being best with weak mods. When you get the mods upgraded pistols pull out so far in front it isn't funny. Even the pistol shotgun does more damage than the proper ones. Also the dual pistols are kind of pointless at the moment as they only increase fire rate which unless you are some insane mouse clicker you won't be able to use well.

Friend has been playing this for a week or so. Decided last night to give it a go. 1.3gb download so practically nothing these days.

It feels very much like Mass Effect 1 as far as the lack of glueing yourself to cover if you brush past it goes and with a rather limited selection of skills like ME2. Did the first few missions. Trivially easy atm but friend said it picks up in difficulty around Venus which would be good because I've just spent the last 2 levels sprinting along shooting things in the face with my pistol and slashing things if they were still alive when I got too close.

I decided to pick Magi (which looks very much like a Biotic) skill-wise but I've not really had much need for Pull yet.

The starter levels are extremely easy however the further you get into it the harder it becomes. As your going through the levels don't rush the maps, search them for lockers(loot) and if a mob drops a MOD you can press 'G' to leave a way point for your squad to come pick it up.

The weapon and armour system is quite decent, you augment your gear with MODS that can be combined and upgraded depending on your playstyle and warframe.

I play it every now and then and have had a few blueprints drop for weapons, however they require tons of materials which you get from specific missions and take 12hours to make

It does continue while you're offline though so its really not that bad.

Finally realised yesterday that the prices for the stuff in the market are Credits OR Platinum. Bought myself a Lex (the handcannon style pistol) and got a Paris (bow) in the foundry that would have finished early this morning. A little tempted to get the 2nd tier Founders Pack (the first that comes with the Excaliber Prime suit) because it is quite an enjoyable game and it'd be nice to get a little more platinum to get a full compliment of Orokin Reactor/Catalysts and slots with plenty left over if I want something else.

Love the movement in the game too.

Well the bow is great, lots of damage and accuracy but slow to power up shots. My only gripe is not having an Orokin Catalyst available to allow me to MOD it :( They only cost 20 in-game plat and you can buy 75 plat for £3.40 so I'll probably just pay for some.

Tried one of the 35-40+ missions solo, bad mistake as everything has shields and once you get a load in a room it's game over !

Yeah the Infested just roflstomp you too if you don't have the firepower. When you've got 10 Chargers coming at you with Runners mixed in its bad enough but you can kite them and win, but throw in a Disruptor or Toxicant and its gg.

Still working on clearing out most of the easier systems atm. There isn't any clear path to take and the system map is frankly a maze. We just cleared a path to Eris(?) through I think it was Uranus doing stuff like 5-20 missions and the next system turned into probably those 35-40 ones you were trying.

I've recently started playing this after watching some videos of it on youtube. Quite liking the game so far. The new clan dojo's are pretty sweet, just finished my clan key to access the one for the clan I'm in.

I can see that actually making warframes for yourself would take a long time. Even getting all the neccessery blueprints to get you started could take a while.

So is this something people would recommend?
My clan is looking into other games as BF3 has got very stale & we all seem to be playing different things now meaning the TS is split into multiple channels. It's making things not seem like a clan anymore. We need a game that'll get us all together again.

Don't think enough people from here play it. Which is a shame cos its a brilliant game.

Sure is a shame, i have been having lots of fun :D
is it worth while joining a guild/clan? at the moment content is not all that hard so people just dash through it so i either run without firing a shot or just mop up. Hoping content will get a bit tougher so people are forced to chat :)

Clans do get massive benefits in the form of clan research. Weapons that can only be attained by getting the blueprints from the related research stations in the Dojo. I am in a clan myself but recently there hasn't been much discussion going on in it. It probably isn't difficult to find any reasonably sized or long standing clan that has finished all the research available so you can get hold of it. And you could probably find some people organising high level stuff in there.

The public games tend to be like that since you're just jumping in. Mid-high level mobiles/defences/survivals you have to play the Frost Roulette (as I've seen it called) whereby if someone isn't on Frost then you're going to have great fun completing it. Low-mid level stuff (particularly Alerts) will be people rushing through it for the reward. Maybe high level ones too if they're brought strong guns. Even if they get harder you wouldn't get any discussion because you join the team as you start it and typically join an in progress game so you can hardly tailor your choices. Not only that but people are getting a bit wiser about the new damage system now.

The Voids and Derelicts (and occasionally people forming for high level defences/survivals) are all in the Recruiting tab. Decided to host a Derelict Defence last night aiming for the long game so we got some good chat going on. Couple of Nova's, a Vauban (friend who started typing during the wave 20 reward which accidentally swapped him to Hellfire :p) and me on Mag Prime. We got to wave 25 but could easily have gone higher. I was having loads of fun trying to pull off trick shots with the Penta. Pulling targets and blowing them up as they flew through the air :D

Holy thread revival but....
After watching the above review, I gave it a try and damn, for a free game it really is a lot of fun. So much to do, and endless ways to go about doing it, an amazing community.

I can't help but feel Destiny 2 is going to be a step down after playing this, a lot to take in when you start but it does all begin to click together. You need to get past the first boss then it starts to gel.
Looks pretty good and runs really well, and has a huge player base (45k online now)

Will stick with it until D2 comes out but, so far so very good, and like he says, no other game lets you feel like such a bad ass  whilst still being able to smack you down if you get too cocky.

Give it a try if you have 1-2hrs to kill on a quiet Sunday.

I've been playing this for the last week or so as I'm waiting for D2. I think the game is really good - there's tons to do, like you say! I'm really enjoying it and may delay my D2 purchase because of it.

i came to this recently too with the intention of filling the gap until D2. However i have already stopped, i dont really know what i was doing but each mission seemed to be activate a beacon, protect it, move on and continue with no end in sight? not really sure. Seems well made and a solid game but i just found it confusing :D

The more I play this game the better it gets. Loving the quests and I still haven't unlocked any other warframes(classes) so there's still loads more to do!
