Warhammer

I think it was a cool hobby, I certainly don't think you really should stop at any age if you like it, unless it is all you do.

However I don't mind what hobby you do as long as you enjoy it you can do it at any age, I can never forgive trainspotting, for some reason I just can't get my head round it, stood on a wet platform ticking a book - specially when it is just the same Arriva train shuttle you saw an hour ago...I can understand when it is awesome looking vintage trains and the like!

What a random tangent!

Anywho, OP - the first one you posted looks awesome! I tried to buy one of the professionally painted ones once in the window but they wouldn't let me, would only teach me how to paint them :(

but I can't help but laugh at the twenty-somethings living in their parent's basement carrying those black plastic briefcases around.

:(

My 2500 points of necrons are doing pretty well, though most people at the local GW (Newcastle) play Space Marines (the newbs!). And while gauss weapons are awsome against tanks and small weak enemies, power armour is one of my downfalls. Untill I get my Lords into close combat.

I haven't played for a long time.
Like many others I played a lot when I was younger - spent all of my weekends in the local store.

I worked for Games Workshop for a little while.
First I did Saturday's, then it was my first job when I finished college.
I was offered the manager's job in the Reading store - however as I lived in Cambridge and I was still young and didn't want to stay in retail I said no.

The advantage of being staff is that you could go and visit head office - every full time member of staff does an HO visit at least once.
Is it fun looking around the HO?
No, not really.
However you do get the opportunity to buy figures by weight and not in blister packs.
So you go around the warehouse picking all the figures you want.
They weigh it all up and that is how you are charged - I got all the figures I needed for all my armies for peanuts compared to the shop prices.
Put it this way - I got 50% discount on some lines for being staff - weight purchases were closer to 80% discount.
Somewhere I still have my:

Warhammer Fantasy Undead Army
Warhammer Fantasy Elven Army
Warhammer 40k Marines
Warhammer 40k Eldar
Space Marine Marines & Imperial Army
Blood Bowl Chaos Team

Games workshops are probably going to be bankrupt soon. Their share prices and profits have dropped over 80% since 2005 because they put the prices up too high for anyone to afford. Even their official forums closed down because they didn't like the feedback they were getting.

:O

Sweet discounts!

I never buy anything in-store. There are shops on the internet way cheaper. www.buyforlessonline.co.uk stocks them much cheaper than GW. They sell lots on the bay, though I found them through the large river, where they also sell Warhammer models. Shipping will make up at least part of the price difference, but buying a couple of items will give you rather good savings.

I used to read the fiction, interesting stuff. The models got too expensive fast though. £10 for an Orc buggy with plasma gun :( and I was crap at painting. Only did a small orc horde (12 orcs) and the buggy.

Used to play a few years ago - was an Eldar/Harlequin combo army. Was pretty destructive too. It got too expensive and time consuming for moi.

Still have models in my bedroom at home gathering dust, lol.

I can't help but feel that, judging from this thread alone, GW would make much more money if they lowered their prices.

I've followed the Warhammer 40k storyline via the novels and computer games, but the tabletop game always seemed like an investment in time and money I just couldn't afford.

I used to play when I was around 14, but couldn't grasp the rules and gave up, plus it was costing me a lot of money.

I still paint, yes it is horrifically expensive, but for really expensive look at forgeworld ( its a subsiduary of GW and makes BIG stuff).

Anyway just finished painting this yesterday:

I do it mainly to relax, i find the painting element fulfills that nicely. I also like the background. I don't play, i never really got the rules hehe.

I like looking at the paint jobs on the models in Workshop windows... Thats as close as I like to get to it.

I used to play Battletech as a teenager... used to love painting the mechs into lances.

Edit: those are awesome ^^

Those are amazing Vargo, where did you learn to paint like that? i am trying to pick up new teqniques but cannot find anywhere helping me. i have known about Drybrushing, colour blending for quite a while but some of yourt teqniques look great.

I just enjoy painting them, not really into playing it as i have tried many times. i have collected all sorts and feel that having a large collection to look at is great.

I wish I had the patience for painting models well, but I don't really. Plus, my hands tend to shake when doing anything requiring small all delicate movements, such as painting.
Plus, painting a zillion necron warriors gets damn boring!

It depends, some people really like painting and find it satisfying like myself, while others find differant things interesting. if you want to get better at painting you just have to practise like anything and spend your time learning differant ways of painting and spending time painting each peice. you will eventually become quicker.

Sinny,

your best bet is just keep playing around with techniques and find what suits you, and always alwys make sure you thin the paint down to the consistency of milk or there abouts, it requires more work but gives much better results, and never be scared to try something, if you are painting with thin enough paint its easy enough to put a basecoat back down and start again. Also if you can get the GW Foundation paints especially the red and yellow, they are invaluable if you are painting on a black undercoat.

And finally go to www.warseer.com/forums

and go to the modelling section you will get some great advice on techniques etc, people are very friendly and willing to offer constructive critique, and make my painting look rubbish! a lot of the 'Eavy Metal painters post on there as well as some GD winners, they often give tips etc on how to achieve certain results. I post on there under the same pseudonym.

Strange, was just speaking about this to a mate over the weekend.
We concluded that we both gave up due to the hideous costs. I can't even remember where I got the money to buy all my stuff at that age. Doubt I have much left, think I have the 40k rules/supplied scenery and maybe a couple of lead miniatures. (safety first, none of this "white metal")
I quite liked Space Marines, just because they looked cool... Nowadays the closest I'll get to Games Workshop is Dawn of War.

Never played Warhammer or anything like it. But it does amaze me that they seem to have a shop on most high streets. I wondered how they were managing it considering so many shops seem to be struggling recently.

To be honest i have not noticed this, have not been their since 05 ^_^, most of the stuff i came across was already basecoated in my painting box i found in the garage and triggered an interest. i will have to go in and take a gander.
