As the title suggests. My 08 1.8t petrol Focus is coming gracefully to the end of its life. I'm after something newer and with more poke. I drove a 1.6t Astra (200bhp) a few years ago as a rental and found it nice to drive. These can be had, 2018 plate, low mileage, top spec for ~£12k on auto trader.

Is there anything else worth considering at this price point? Is it worth increasing my budget slightly? I saw a few Seat Leon's with similar specs, though these seem to be more expensive and less powerful generally.

2 cars spring to mind:

Focus ST
Golf GTI (though you’ll need an older model)

Though these could be more hot than warm.

What are the most important things you’re looking for?

If you can find a bit more, or be comfortable with higher mileage, I'd be looking at an BMW m135i.

You'll be looking a bit older but I'd take a 2014 m135i over a 2018 astra any day!

M135i would be my choice; if I wasn’t carting family about all the time.

Megane RS250 or RS265 suits all your needs & you should be able to get a decent one & have plenty left for mods!

You can map those to around 330bhp 400-450nm ...but on stock they are seriously fast already! 0-60 sub 6 seconds 150ish top speed!

Now hear me out... A 40kWh Nissan Leaf.

You could get a 2020 model for close to your budget and you will leave nearly any manual petrol and diesel car behind at the lights (up to about 40mph anyway).

This one is really dependent on whether the range works for you and it makes a big difference if you have your own driveway.

About 150hp with almost instant torque can be a lot of fun.

Peak Motors already - OP is after a warm hatch and a Nissan Leaf is suggested…

What even is a "Hot Hatch"? A Leaf is a hatchback and it is pretty fast with a 0 - 60 time of 7.4 seconds.

I bet 9 times out of 10 a Leaf 40 would be faster 0 - 30 mph at the lights than nearly any other hot hatch. Even in my Leaf 24kWh I am faster off the line than most manual cars. I have been faster off the line and then up to the speed limit than numerous "Hot hatches" that were looking to get in front of me. Unless you are sitting revving the engine like Vin Diesel at the lights, a Leaf driver, or any other EV, will be a car length in front before a petrol cars rear wheels cross the painted line just by flooring the accelerator pedal. You can't deny it.

For me personally, I think it is way more fun being able to get great acceleration every time with nearly no effort away from the lights, than it is occasionally going fast down a motorway slip road.

Sure you don't get the bangs and pops but what good does that do you when you are being out paced at every traffic light stop by a Granny driving an EV and you can only go 70MPH on the motorway anyway!

If you can charge at home then it is also really cheap to run as well. It costs me about 3p a mile currently.

It's just a suggestion though, but I think it would be a mistake to just instantly dismiss it solely because it doesn't come with go faster stripes, doesn't have ST or R after the car name or have dual exhausts in the middle.

The Leaf also has the benefit of not having middle aged passers by looking at you and shaking their heads when you are sitting there creating a racket kidding on you are driving a Ferrari! Mind you teenagers might think you are cool if that is who you are trying to impress!

There is a lot more to a hot hatch than 0-60 or even 0-30
I’d much rather an older Golf GTI, or even an older Clio 182, than a Nissan Leaf - I just can’t see one being fun to drive on a B road.

A Leaf can be very fun on country roads. Instant torque coming out of slow corners is a lot of fun. Nothing stopping you upgrading suspension, tyres etc on a Leaf.

I have no idea if the OP is even interested in an EV, it was just a suggestion to consider but I feel you are doing the OP a disservice to just dismiss it though without any good reasons.

I'd steer clear of the Astra, primarily due to every one I've experienced being pretty unreliable, especially at this age.

Left field suggestion of a Leon FR, you can get these in a 1.8 guise and definitely a 'warm' hatch, I'd argue GTI, 182 and the renault sports are hot hatches, great cars but definitely not a warm hatch. With the Leon you'll get a lot of tech and reliability without the premium commanded by the likes of the VW and Audis.

Not exactly exciting though is it. Handles like a boat and tops out at under 100mph.

What are the most important things you’re looking for?

- Reliability
- Size (roughly equivalent to current or bigger)
- Age
- Roughly 200bhp or more
- Android auto

A Focus-ST is probably perfect for my needs but out of budget for a recent example and they come with high insurance premiums and are likely theft targets - to be fair, as is any moderately desirable car these.

A Focus, Civic, Leon or Astra are not exactly the first thing I think of when someone asks me to name an exciting car! I think the Leaf handles pretty well and when are you going over 100mph?

I have made my suggestion, I will leave it up to the OP to decide.

The Leaf ticks 3 out of 4 of those requirements! The instant torque makes up for the lack of horses imo.
