Warm hatch for <£13k

For a couple of grand more OP you could buy a mk.7 Golf R, 300 bhp sub 5 second 0-60mph as standard, come in 2 or 4 doors so family friendly.

You can especially at the bottom end of the market. He’s not not looking for a hot hatch anyway.
I wasn't looking for hot hatch either but ended up with a 2014 Golf R for £14950k, it's turning out to be a great car touch wood (touches head), not (yet) been stolen.

Most of the ones I’ve seen at that price are Cat S. Then you have issues with carbon build up and the added cost of DSG services. Decent car but a risk second hand.

Yeh there does seem to be a lot of them in that price range that are damaged/repaired, mine isn't, you can find them if you take your time. mine came with the DSG just been serviced. didn't know they were prone to carbon build up? afaik the main weakness on them is the waterpump/thermostat fail quite often and at random, upto £1000 to repair.

Yeah and the water pump.

There are a few Audi S1s around that price as well, but I think all these VW engines suffer the same flaws :/

Yeah I’ve got the same engine in my Polo and although it’s been flawless it’s now approaching 60k. Looking to get rid of it while it’s still working well and getting something more child friendly.

Chaps, I'm not buying a good condition, newish Golf R for £13k!

Leon and the Ceed GT look like okay contenders.

Some manufacturer will make a mint if they bring out a light weight (relative for an EV I Mean) hot EV hatch that looks stylish and is reasonably priced. I can't understand why someone hasn't done this yet.
That will take a phase shift in battery technology though. They could make a lightweight EV with current tech but you'd have to lose a lump of battery to do so. Then it would get slated for having poor range.

My MX5 is a prime example of the problem. It only does 1000 miles a year but when it does make an appearance it gets driven in a spirited way, parked up in the middle of nowhere while we spend a day at the coast then driven back home having covered over 100 miles. Or it does 150+ miles each way to go to an event.

So I'd be looking for a real world 150 mile range which is going to be what? A 40kWh pack? That isn't going to result in a light weight car after you account for expectations of a modern car (safety, tech etc.).

EV's are faster off the mark than most manual cars that are driven by normal people. Unless you are sitting in your hot hatch revving, ready to drop the clutch, even a geriatric with her foot resting on the accelerator of an EV at the lights is able to floor it and get up to speed faster. It is just too easy.

You petrol heads might not like the fact that even basic EV's can embarrass "performance" ICE cars in the acceleration metric but that's just the way it is.

I wish you guys would let it go, the OP has already made it clear that they don't want an EV at the moment and I respect that.
Funny how you don't find every automatic driver doing the traffic light GP. It's just as easy to plant your foot to the floor in an automatic ICE as it is an EV. The point is PEOPLE AREN'T RACING YOU, your traffic light GP "win" is in your head. You aren't embarrassing people and even if someone is in a performance car it doesn't mean they live their daily commute a quarter mile at a time.

This obsession with the 0-40 seems to go hand in hand with EV driving for a lot of people. As someone who enjoys driving (in the right car and conditions) I honestly don't see the appeal once the novelty wears off. It does explain how someone I know vaporised an £800 set of Michellins in less than 20000 miles though

Basically no one cares about EV’s and the op has very limited choice within his budget, due to overinflated prices within used car market still.

Yeah and the water pump.

As an FYI this is a problem with all direct injection cars, both petrol and diesel.

Petrol engines used to inject fuel through the intake manifold which washed the intake valves, however with the evolution of combustion engines and the ever increasing need for fuel efficiency and power manufacturers have decided direct injection is the way forward.

This unfortunately imo is actually is not necessarily true for the life of the engine due to this gumming up of the intake tract. As the engine ages and the intake tract carbons up the efficiency does decrease somewhat.

Lexus and new ford engines (believe it might be the 2.0 turbo) have additional injectors in the intake tract to remove the carbon, though I believe this only happens on long journeys and light throttle usage.

The EA888 engine isn't unique basically.

The best way to rectify it is to have regular walnut blasting every few years. It's a simple job and there is plenty of specialists up and down the country who can carry this out. Beauty of VW's is their is a lot of them and lots of knowledge to keep them tip top.
