**WARNING: DO NOT BUY POWERCOLOR 290 PCS+ CARDS FOR MINING (NOW RESOLVED THESE CARDS ARE FINE)!!**

i noticed using the update bios the less stable oc u can get because the card is working a lot more..

before the update i could easily do 1150/1350 with +50 but now with the update it needs +69.

so im guessing if u have a very poor card and wanting it to run it has should by using the bios update, u may find yourself having issues at stock.

Aye possibly. At least you know what's causing it now. I'm annoyed that i didn't think of that as I've had conversations with Humbug about this dating months back when he got his PCS card.

:) don't worry about it. i know now it's not a faulty card

it seems F4505LAB was done on 05/04/14, not sure if 04 is the month or 05 but batch's after that date should have that bios on them

just received the card. but it has the old bios on it which has the performance issue. i don't know if i can flash the new bios which i got for my first card.

because it says,

"This is Raymond from PowerColor, we were contacted before about performance issue with a small batch of cards. We have a bios update now that fixes the performance issue. To get the bios update, please email me with the EAN code, Serial Number and Model number. Basically all the sticker number on the back of the card. The bios will be released on a per case basis, so please do not release it publicly as it might damage other graphic card. You can email me directly at [email protected].

I would ignore all that waffle and just flash it with the same bios you used for the first one, with crossfire I like having the same bios anyway

well i have both cards in and running but gpu1 temperate goes to between 80 - 82c, gpu2 temperate goes to 67c.

there a big gap between the cards so why gpu1 temperate so high?

Things you can do to improve the situation.

1. Find out which card runs cooler. Run that in slot 1.
2. Ensure you have a positive pressure case. More intake fans than exhaust.
3. Remove spare pci brackets around the gpu's.
4. Use high static pressure fans as intakes, Noctua Industrial ideal.
5. Place a high static pressure fan near the vrms of the gpu's.
6. Use a side exhaust fan or two on the side of your case sucking out the hot air the gpu's leaves in the case.
7. Water cool. :p

Really sorry to bump such an old thread but I was wondering if you could help me with one of these cards. A friend bought one from Overclockers over christmas and it was faulty so it was replaced, but the new card is highly unstable with his motherboard (An ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0).

This is his first PC build and he's really disappointed having spent so much on it that it has been so unusable and crashy. I noticed some of you mentioned an updated BIOS from PowerColor? Can you point me in the direction of this as I wonder if it could possibly alleviate any of the issues he's having?

Cheers,

Rich

EDIT:

Just to clarify, the rest of the PC is flawless with another graphics card, and the R9 290+ woks perfectly on another system, so I'm totally confused by the whole situation.
