The problem with BMWs is that every time they bring out a new 'series', the old ones suddenly look very dated.

Odd also how the 'council house / back to back terrace brigade' seem to have a love for old 'bling bling' black BMWs.

Very ture I've found also. See a E39 and thing "meh". Still very nice don't get me wrong :)

So very true. Not seen them in E39's yet really but I guess its only a matter of time. Luckily the 5 seems to escape largely, which is why you don't see too many blinged up E34's, it's mostly either 3's (SPORTY LOL) or 7's (LOL BIG BMW LOL) they go for.

Looks a decent deal, but the whole "Selling due to baby getting older" bit sounds little strange, a new born baby 18 months ago meant he had to sell a Type-R for a 5 series? And now because the kids 18 months he is going to buy something smaller? Bizarre.

Think I need to check one of these out myself at some point, as Im debating swapping the FTO for something a little more refined.

Out of interest, I went to Direct line for a quote using the car in the ad, and for my wife as the main driver, and me as named it costs £664. We're both 24. I want one.

/falls off chair!

I agree that it sounds weird....in fact any car ad that talks about babies makes me slightly suspicious. It's like the "baby forces sale" blurb. Why don't people stick to talking about the car? It's not like the baby's thrown in as an extra...

This is correct. All manual transmission 6 cylinder E39's have 5 speed gearboxes.

wow im so uneducated.....i would have though if a laguna with 205bhp got a 6spd then a 530i could get one. I guess thats why it feels soo smooth as you dont have to rev the arse out it to get anywhere. :o

6 speed boxes arent necessarily the best way to go all the time. More gears isn't always best!

What's power got to do with how many gears it has? :)

If you read what i said before i mention that having a 5spd box on a big engine like the 5's then that probably makes it feel a lot smoother than having a 6spd and having to rev more.

BMW are the best in their class. Audi and Merc are quite simply failing to keep up with BMW's improvements over the past few models and now that they have decided to use force induction, the M division are going to be rubbing their grubby little paws.

The new M3 4.0 V8 is going to destroy the RS4 in both figures and price and it doesn't need 2 turbo's to get over 400bhp.

The 5 series are big and bulky but they still have a 'sporty' feel. The 3 series is just such a good car though it's tough for bmw to outperform themselves, although they managed it with the M5 I dare say...

That car in the advert screams to me 'rust' or something else on the car is buggered. £7500 is well below the price range of that kind of car if it was in mint condition. The only drawback on it is the mileage and what looks to be lack of service history. Once every 14,000 or so miles by looking at the list... I'm sure the 5 series are around 10,000 miles, maybe even 8,000.

Pass me whatever your smoking please mate.

In MOST 6 speed cars, the sixth gear is more like a cruising gear so you'd only ever use it when doing high speeds.

In fairness I think the 6 cylinders 5 series from 525i upwards would benefit from a 6th gear in terms of lowering RPM at speed.

The engines are very quiet though so you don't really notice how high the engine is revving unless your doing some mega illegal speed.

.

The current model RS4 does not rely on forced induction to produce over 400 horse. And the general consensus is that the new M3 will have to be out of this world to beat the audi.

To the op i would say apply the 'if it appears too good to be true it probably is rule'. Hard in the case of that car as, going by appearances, its a stunning example of a brilliant car. The story about getting it because of a baby and now, less than a year and a half later, he's ready to go back to a CTR or similar smells a little.

The 530i, like all E39's, uses variable servicing. The average interval is 15,000 miles. This is then automatically increased or decreased depending on the cars usage. 14k miles is average and suggests this car has been used for general town and the occasional journey use.

why is it bizarre?
there is no need for the size vehicle and a smaller one would be more practical (if chosen correctly).
bit like me selling the focus to buy the 3 series, now selling it due to practicality reasons and looking for something else.
