Was Stopped by the police...

You don't have a clue, in short. You post your rose tinted glasses stories, which set out an absolutely angelic 'offender' who did EVERYTHING right and just got screwed by the system.

Poor little motorist, does not comply with terms of insurance, gets cancelled, never got any of the (no doubt numerous) letters that would have been sent, there is some kind of an 'oversight' but the only real crime he committed was driving without displaying a tax disc.

Everyone is entitled to do what they want as long as they do it in good faith. The Police are just a bunch of law enforcing scum who have no idea how to employ discretion. Right?

You seem to think that discretion should be employed EVERYWHERE. Illegal tyres, no insurance, anything else you want to add to that list? Discretion is circumstance, officer and offender based.

Had your 'friend' not been tugged he would have driven without insurance indefinitely it would seem, on the basis that he THOUGHT he was insured. Would you be defending him with the same old "Poor chap, did not know" sob story if he found out he was uninsured after an accident?

Posts about 'friends' speeding like idiots, stories about corrupt officers who let off speeding for labour work (Which you seem to appreciate). Then again, who knows what to believe. You are recounting a story as told by someone else.

Would you still have the same inflexible, Judge Dredd, "I am the leuww!" attitude if it came to this guy:

And he had ended up driving home from the airport uninsured through absolutely no fault of his own?

If so, I'm just glad there aren't more police like you on the road!

Anyway, me personally, have been stopped a couple of times.

2-3 times while working (pizza delivery :p) - youngish guy driving round late at night wearing a baseball cap... yeah I guess I fitted the "profile" :p

One of those times, I was borrowing my mum's car while mine was getting repaired, boot full of junk and bits of wood - they decided to empty the whole car and search it... my boss wasn't impressed that a delivery 2 miles away took about an hour and a half :p

Also got followed ~3 miles from a mates house to home at 11pm on a Friday night. When I'd parked up the officer came over and had a chat with me, asked if I'd had a drink, had a laugh when I told him unfortunately not but I had a nice whisky waiting for me inside if he fancied one :p

Can't complain about any of my dealings with them - they've always been polite and professional, and I don't understand why so many people take it personally, they're just doing their jobs.

On my way to work, cop was behind me, What I do everytime I've got some type of police vehicle behind me, I drop my speed, in this case a 30mph road, I just cruise down to 20...They soon turn off :D

That would annoy them if anything.

I do about 35 in a 30 on my speedo with them behind me. They appreciate it and I've never been pulled once by doing that.

That's the thing you don't have to tell them anything related to driving. Its up to them to prove it.

..but it still doesn't demonstrate you're driving responsibly if you don't know how fast you were going. It also opens them up to be able to say 'you were over the limit', and since you admit you don't know how fast you were going, you have no counter.

Accidentally went past a Police car at 63~ in a 50 on my way to work this morning, (dual carriageway, steady stream of cars in the inside lane going 45~50) cue me gripping the seat with my arse and gently easing it down to 50.

Nothing came of it. :p

It's in the post

My wife's been cautioned 3 times (to my knowledge) about speeding, every time for me it's been points.

One time I was on my way home late one evening and a copper going the opposite direction thought I was going quite fast so turned around in pursuit, caught up with me as I was idling along under the speed limit and pulled me over. Just told me he thought I was going too fast (did not provide speed evidence), breathalyzed me etc the full works. I'd had one can of carling mixed with lemonade earlier that evening and the copper looked at me glaringly and said 'borderline'.

Can you be done for speeding without evidence?

Apparently I can, i'm sure he never told me how fast I was traveling and I was never asked how fast I was going either. Copper asked me if I had been drinking and I mistakenly said no as I forgot all about the pint of shandy I had earlier and when the reading showed up on his analyzer it just wound him up and I remember him saying 'DONT LIE TO ME!', then said 'Borderline' I think just to scare the beejesus out of me.

To quote Jesus, "let him who has never sped, cast the first stone"....

Oh that's right, they will be no stone casting then.

You were caught, and let off. If the lesson there isn't the thing that makes you slow down, the chances are, next time you get caught, you won't be so fortunate.

As for me, I'm off for my 2nd "Speed Awareness" course next Monday. :(
