Washing Machine Advice

Hotpoint Aquarius - got the 9kg load one and it's great. Had it 2+ years and runs perfectly well. Digital display, delay timer, 1/2 load and all the other features you could want and not too expensive.

I'd avoid washer/dryers if you were looking at that

This should be a sticky.
In 2002 Merloni (Indesit/Ariston) bought Creda/Hotpoint.
Around 2005 they started to make their appliances with the very cheapest parts and a lot of fun was had in our test labs.
In 2007 all products started to be made in Poland where not only the parts are the cheapest available but the build quality is also awful.
Make your choice.

Can the people suggesting Hotpoint and Indesit be shot?

Heaven forbid the OP buys one but if you do just get the cheaper of the two.

Thanks, I will look for one with a fast spin speed, 1400rpm+.

Don't get sucked in by spin speed.

Most of the higher spin speeds are what are classed as "nominated spin speeds" meaning the only time they spin at the full RPM is under perfect conditions.

The only time a washing machine is in a perfect condition to spin at the full RPM is when it is empty.

I'm quite impressed with how clothes come out of mine. Most stuff hardly needs ironing, if at all, after it's been hanging on the airer.

you will find that any clothes that are left to dry when partially wet will be almost crease free. its been like this for a couple of decades ;)

i always used to hand up my shirts when partially wet and only needed a quick iron. tumble driers are a different kettle of fish. as are wifes who just chuck my stuff in a basket (i dont trust mine to iron - she sucks at it)

Our LG direct drive is pretty good.

Another vote for LG direct drive machines.

So so quiet in comparison to all the machines I have ever seen from all manufacturers. Washing etc is fine

Miele great but typically look dated (if thats an issue for you) and due to quality and cost you tend to run them longer, ie you are likely to be using it when others have become more efficient due to better energy/water usage

I had a hotpoint for 5 years without a single issue, the indesit machine had prior to that lasted 14 months before the bearings went and we also had a year old indesit dryer catch fire.

So far, these two have caught my eye:

- Bosch Exxcel WAQ28460GB Washing Machine Freestanding White £399

- Samsung Ecobubble Quiet Drive WF0704W7W Washing Machine Freestanding White £415

I'm going to have a look at some LG Direct Drives, but they are a bit more expensive and I'm wondering whether it's worth the extra.

Rgds

our LG direct drive is really quiet and has all the bells and whistles you want.

don';t have to worry about belts etc snapping either.

Even the most basic Bosch appliances have lasted my parents well. I went for a Whirlpool washing machine buying my appliances for my first house, but I was limited on budget. It's been fine for the year I've had it so far, but then it gets little use.

Buy according to purpose as well as budget; there's no point in spending £900 on something indestructible if you're only washing for yourself once a week IMO. You can get a Bosch from around £250, unless you need the larger load/extra features.

Just listen to Dimple, he was a washing machine engineer and he is in a rock band!!!

Actually I'm going to step out of these threads now because even I'm getting fed up of saying the same stuff over & over again.

HOWEVER, it was late 2007 when I last had Merloni products in a lab and in 5 years they could have become good quality stuff (I doubt it though).
At one time nobody would have ever bought Skoda but they're well thought of now and I stayed clear of Behringer but I trust their stuff now.
