Anybody know about removing a wasp nest?

I wanted to do some work in the roof space but found a small but active wasp nest. Bought myself a £45 bee suit and removed the nest into a tupperware. Removed it to the bottom of the garden and removed the lid before retiring to a safe distance.

Following day I check on the removed nest which has basically turned to mush due to overnight rain but still crawling with wasps.

Got back in the loft to find wasps working on the spot where the nest had been.

The problem is the roof space is only a crawl space about 3m wide and 1m high so getting in and out takes about 5 minutes. Even with the bee suit I think I would be at risk if I disturbed the wasps that are still active, swift exit not being possible.

So my question is whether the wasps working in the loft have returned from the removed nest which I deposited around 20m from the house; or were they left behind when I removed the nest?

Either your local council will remove it all and treat any remaining infestation for a one off cost or your house insurance may provide cover

I'd probably leave them be[e]? Apparently wasps don't come back to the same nest next year so you could just leave it until they leave by their own accord around October/December time and then clear it out.

That's what I did on my loft when I had a huge nest in there anyway.

I think that the correct approach is to nuke it from outer space. That may cause more than a little structural damage so I would tend to approach a person with expertise in pest control first.

This is going to sound a little crazy but bare with me - use petrol - the fumes will kill off the wasps so wait till night when they'll all be back in there, put a small cup of petrol in a large open container in the space and seal off as well as you can. Also worth trying (if you can) to seal off the opening they are getting in via once they are dead - if it needs ventilation then get some <10mm metal mesh over the holes.
