i bought a really nice revue thommen airspeed xxl at christmas, lovely watches seem to be incredibly well made and can be had in your price range.

Please rotty dont tell me its a pile of crap aswell :o

ok I won't ;)

never heard of it actually so wouldn't know anayway :p

/edit

just had a look , quite nice really

movement is the same one that is used as a base ebauche by Panerai,Breitling etc so you won't go wrong there , the 7750 movement is famed for it's "rotor wobble" , if you hold the watch in yiur hand and move it you can actually feel the weight of the rotor shifting

Phew i was getting worried, the resident watch guru had never heard of them! Yeah they seem to be a decent make and im very happy with mine.

mine also has an exposed back with decorative screws etc :)

heres the blurb:
Revue Thommen, was founded in 1853 by Gedeon Thommen and rapidly developed into one of the leading companies in this sector. In the early days, only wristwatches and pocket watches were produced. They relied exclusively on their own movements, as was only fitting. Around 1920, Revue Thommen also decided to start producing instruments for the aviation industry. This segment was constantly expanded, and today, Revue Thommen’s instruments are among the leading products in the aviation industry.

The wristwatches were produced in La Chaux-de-Fonds for many years. The Revue Thommen Cricket products – mechanical wrist alarms became world famous. Many presidents of the United States were proud wearers of the Revue Thommen Cricket watch, as they were often presented with the watch. One famous person, namely JFK wore his cricket daily. The firm, Grovana Watch Co. Ltd., took over production and global sales of Revue Thommen watches in spring 2001. The firm, Grovana, is one of the leading companies in the Swiss watchmaking industry. Sales of Grovana products have expanded strongly in recent years. Today, its watches are sold through more than 60 country agents around the world. Great attention has always been paid to quality, but if a repair is ever necessary, the spare parts service comes into its own. Any part, ordered Reve Thommen agents, will be dispatched within 48 hours.

When Revue Thommen watches were integrated into Grovana Watch Co. Ltd., it was decided that two main divisions should be further developed: the Airspeed aviation chronometers and the traditional watch division with exclusive Revue Thommen Manufacture movements. The Airspeed lines, which comprise “The Classics” and “The XLarge Collectionare supplemented by the jubilee collection called “The Flyback Collection”. The Airspeed line reflects the technical accuracy and perfection of Revue Thommen’s aviation tradition. The traditional collection is devoted to the original watchmaking art. Thus Revue Thommen has decided to resume production of the tried-and-tested, exclusive Revue Thommen Manufacture movements.

Citizen watches (Skyhawk et al) are good for the kind of money you are looking to spend :)

PS that SE watch looks very cool

anyone know where I can get the Vostok-Europe Expedition-Trophy watch from a uk company?

Not so keen ordering it from overseas and risk paying custom and vat taxes.

**edit**

Hanowa any good?

i think that with the amount of 'which watch?' threads we get that Rotty should write a little guide on them :D

Anyone else think gold watches just look really tacky?

I love my Superocean (Breitling) to bits.
Feels extremely sturdy and to me looks the dogs.
Never liked Jacob's watches, far too tacky and some look like a fisher price design.
I also have a Seiko kinetic as a workhorse watch as well, hasn't let me down since I bought it.

"Europe Expedition" makes me think you would be buying from Europe and in wich case there is no import tax anyway.

will probably get flamed but i bought myself a second hand omega for £250, a constellation automatic.

Very good for an everyday work watch, saves me ruining anything more expensive yet still looks smart and stylish.

Thinking of getting a second hand seamaster for days of graft (ie server installs etc)

Give Alsal watches a call on 020 7353 4195 - they should be able to bring it in if they don't have it in stock.

If you're looking for something nice for around that price range then i would suggest something in the Seiko range.
Seiko make great automatic watches if you look outside their "H Samual" range. What i like personaly about them (apart from good value and great finishing on their high end range) is that they make all their own parts, right down to the oils that lubricate the movement.

I've got several Seiko's ranging from £300ish for SKZ215J1 (same as the K1 but assemebled in Japan) to around £1600 for my Marine Master Spring Drive 600 (this retails for a lot more but i got it cheap from a Japanese source :D). The finish on the MM 600 is outstanding and it's getting a lot more wrist time currently than any other watch in my collection, including my Rolex Daytona which i thought would never be off my wrist !!

What "kind" of watch are you looking for? Dressy, sporty, dive, chronograph, etc?

get a breitling i would love one of there watches.

They make some very nice looking watches, especially the "For Bentley" series but the budget is £350 at most :p

Very nice, I was set on getting a blue face watch (My Vostok Europe mentioned earlier), but black is much classier.

That looks really good. Went for a quartz watch over automatic...?
