Watchmen

I'm not old enough to remember the Cold War nor was it covered at school so I know very little about it.

I grasped the basic idea of the film, nuclear war and all. I suspect your right that most people will see it as simply a super hero film though.

I am too young to remember the Cold War, it didn't stop me from reading about it online and more recently via wiki.

I don't think you did grasp the basic concept of the film if you think it was mearly about nuclear war......

Of course its about more than nuclear war, I was going to add more before but didn't want to risk putting any spoilers

The butcher was set on fire in the book. It sort of half shows you Rorschach splitting their heads open, but he left the guy to die in a burning building.

The canteen bit was very much in the book also, and was a part I was actually looking forward to seeing. The bit where Nite Owl and Silk Spectre stormed the prison though, that's all off screen.

The fire scene basically took places off screen with implied violence.

The frying pan one was merely the impact shot - there wasn't a close up of the suffering the guy went through.

That's kinda what I meant :)

The most engrossing intro to any movie i have ever seen. The full song running, going through the years totally wonderful.

How does anyone like this film? It was absolutely terrible and I was unbelievably disappointed. They call Snyder a "visionary" director because that's exactly what he is; pretty pictures and naff all else.

There's no accounting for taste, I loved it. Thought it lived up to the novel very well considering. Could have done without the sex scene, didn't add anything.

What don't you like about it? Or are you one of these who went expecting a fight fight kiss kiss save the girl film?

its probably the closest we will ever get to the watchmen comic, there was a ton of stuff missing the most important part was the tales of the black frieghter which is really important to the story.

i enjoyed it

Ah good some more people have seen it now :)

IMO it was the best film for a good few years. I'd never read the book/comics beforehand so I went in cold but didn't feel it was difficult to follow, more facets and branches to the storyline than your average superhero movie but that's not saying much. Even though it was 3 hours long I didn't even notice and when I looked at the time when I got out I was surprised. I actually wish it was longer (looking forward to extended versions on BluRay).
The sequence set to "The times they are a changin" by Bob Dylan at the beginning was epic. :D

It may require a little more brain power than your usual superhero films but that's by no means a bad thing, I'd rather not have the storyline handed to me on a plate.

10 out of 10 for me  I'll be preordering the BluRay as soon as possible. Films like this don't come around often.

I dunno the scene just felt out of place to me, still a Dr Manhattan spit roast would be quite a sight ;) Put it this way, I would have preferred some more of the novel backstory instead.

Definitely number one on my Blu-ray list.

Not at all. Some of the things I didn't like (I've tried to forget that I wasted my whole evening on it):

- Way too long. Could easily cut an hour out.
- No tension or build up particularly.
- Random character storylines throughout, in no particular order, at no particular point and in varying detail (and for some, no background at all).
- Stupid amount of plot holes and unexplainables - i.e. where did the blue tiger come from, why does Rawshank's (sp?) mask move, where did all the Egyptian-loving come from suddenly at the end, why does a man who can change any matter he wants still insist on breaking through a glass roof with his fist to catch the villain aimlessly, how/why are the seemingly normal people super-strong. I am aware that these things are probably explained in the comics, but if a film is made it should be able to stand up on its own.
- The story was pants.
- Ridiculous music that people think's a good choice because it's by a "visionary director" and is therefore artistic and must have some deep thought behind it - Dambusters for Vietnam? Hallelujah for a sex scene? Great.
- Sex scene was ridiculous and only in the film because a) it can be and b) it looks good (like most of the rest of the film).

That's a snippet. I could write more if a) I could be bothered and b) I wasn't trying to forget the film.
