Water bill

How do you all use so little. Everytime I do the calculator or even talk to United Utilities they say im better without a meter and that's £840 this year.
I don't how people manage to use so much, what do you all do, fill bathtubs all day long?

The numbers on the meter should be cubic meters of water used. It at least mine is (different water company).
The last few numbers are likely fractions of a cubic meter.
So you just need to find out what you pay per cubic meter, plus standing charges for sewerage /drainage whatever.
Standing charge is the killer almost half my bill is that and theres nothing you can do to lower it other than move somewhere cheaper

I want some rain !!!! -Just added another water butt to the collection -Now got 9 placed around the garden and it hasn't rained enough this year to fill them.
I have set up a garden Trug with a tap on so can fill it with rain water - plug pressure washer to it and pressure wash the car.
I'm with you on the rain butts were empty till we had that rain a couple weeks ago which filled them but they're getting low again

As mentioned, average use is 140-something litres per person per day. So I would take a reading, wait a week or two, take another, divide by number of days. If you're below 300 then you're average for 2 people. If you're much below that, congrats - your bill is probably overestimated.

We were using ~175L each dally but we don't have a shower, so lots of baths. I discovered a very small leak in a toilet and sorted that. Installed a shower recently. Average usage now down to 140-something.

Hoping to improve it further when I move the boiler nearer the kitchen and we don't have to run 3 minutes of water before it gets hot.

Where I live, each house has a county water meter between the county water supply under the street and our underground house water inlet. The meter counts in 1000s of (US) gallons and is read manually.

We average between 4000 to 5000 gallons of water per month for a family of five (with three young kids), which is roughly equal to between 15000 and 19000 litres. 5000 gallons costs us $68.35, which is currently equal to £51.26. Our water is pretty good quality, although I don't know anyone who doesn't filter it with a reverse osmosis or mavity-fed filter before drinking it. I know of some who have "whole house filters" to soften and filter their water so that it's prefiltered at every tap, but I'm not that bougie.

Actually it's more.
Fresh water fixed £317, standing charge £101, wastewater £507.

I fill in the calculator as honest as I can and it reckons £1026, so best without a meter at £920.

Just like in the electrify thread, we all pay different rates to its pointless posting costs in £when talking about usage. Post how many cubic meters you use.

If you are not on a meter and complaining of high rates, get one. The flat rates are set well above typical use on the assumption that because it’s unmetered you will use more.

If there is only 2 of you in the house you’ll probably be paying well more than actually use on a metered connection as it’s based on the value of the property (which is a proxy for size in reality), not how many people actually live there.

2 x adults and 1 x 4yo - Around 80m3 per year, which the water company says is a bit below the average for similar typical households in the area.
Probably save a few thousand L a year only using butt water (sounds so wrong!!) for the garden.

About 5 m3 a month for 2 people here.

Unless I’m cleaning or topping up the pool, then all bets are off if it’s sunny and breezy as evaporation on a 60 m2 surface area pool is mad.

anyone remember the advert back in the day.

if it's yellow let it mellow
if it's brown flush it down

I still live by that probably 35 years on (total guess on time)
My urine is brown. Should I ring a vet or go to the funeral directors?

Could someone please give me a approx water bill from my meter.
I am with Severn Trent Water and had a meter installed last July and will be paying one bill for the yearly water usage.
I have trawled their web site and rang numerous numbers but can't get through to anyone (the web site is even worse than BT and EE).
I have used to date 55 units so water and other charges.
The reason i went water meter was the £600 bill for this year - so anything below £500 come July I will be happy but happier still if it's way less.

My old brain can't seem to get a grip on this anymore.

Like yourself, i'm also with Severn Trent Water. Up until the current billing period (1/4/25 to 31/3/26) my bill was based on Rateable value. The bill for this period issued on the 24/2/25 was £1,064.06, payable at £133 per month.
A quick call to STW, explained i lived on my own and a water meter was installed. I now pay £28 per month and the chap i spoke to on the phone said that was based on typical single person occupancy.
So my bill has dropped from nearly £1100 a year to under £300 a year. They will read the meter twice a year and that monthly debit would be adjusted depending on how much i actually use, i'm guessing it will be well under £300 a year.

lol we have a water softener and it isn't because we are bourgeois . I love our water to drink and we don't filter our drinking water but it is really hard and plays havoc with things like showers or washing machine etc and also makes cleaning taps etc a pita.

I wish we didn't need to have one tbh esp as the price of the salt which goes in it has literally doubled in the last 5 years.
