The only time a water meter can't be fitted is if you have a shared water supply. Even then you can insist that they give you your own supply, you would have to provide the pipe from the boundary of your property though.

That's not true, my friend can't have one because of the internal pipework not being suitable, it splits off instantly need have to pay a plumber to alter it all.
He's on an assessed bill.

How would they Know ? My meter was fitted in the path outside my house when i was at work, no one from STW has ever been inside my house.

lol we have a water softener and it isn't because we are bourgeois . I love our water to drink and we don't filter our drinking water but it is really hard and plays havoc with things like showers or washing machine etc and also makes cleaning taps etc a pita.

I wish we didn't need to have one tbh esp as the price of the salt which goes in it has literally doubled in the last 5 years.
Haha, I said bougie as a bit of a tongue in cheek comment. My wife's grandparents have a whole house water softener in their house and they're certainly not bougie. Their house is on a well and the water is very hard. As you said, very hard water can wreck appliances, pipes, and fixtures.

I've just applied for a water meter.
I'm supplied by United Utilities and my account says:
Your current balance
£954.34

There are only 2 people living in the property..
I'm hoping a meter will be a little cheaper.
Fingers crossed they're able to install one.

Because he asked for a meter fitted, they came round to have a look where to fit it and said they couldn't. Outside is all under concrete as well.

anyone remember the advert back in the day.

if it's yellow let it mellow
if it's brown flush it down

I still live by that probably 35 years on (total guess on time)
I knew somebody who only flushed the loo once a day, brown or yellow. Let's just say I got a nasty surprise when I was visiting and used their loo once.

I'm on Anglian's seasonal plan (I.e. higher cost May thru August), think I've averaged around 110L day for the past few years, currently pay £26 month

Imagine how much your loo would cost now if we still had the old cysterns -Quite a lot of water went down in one flush - probably half of that now.
I think this was the cause of our drains blocking. They are pitch and asbestos and there is a almost level length about 9 metres from M/H outside the kitchen - A big old flush would shift it but these 2 ltr jobs do not have the volume or weight behind them.
Had drain lined and much better but if you neglect them they block because solids and paper grind to a halt 3/4 down so we have the habit of chucking half a bowl of washing up water down loo. It's usually the case of a new jobby down knocks old one off the end but you only need a woman who uses half a roll of paper at a time and you are in the crap. Last time was up to manhole lid.

Our house is 1960 vintage and I am not claiming that the toilet is that vintage however it is a close couple ceramic cistern but with a handle mounted on the front and an old fashioned ballcock mechanism (but in plastic so a later replacement i expect). It does however hold at least a gallon if not more. I have sunk a full shampoo bottle of water to reduce the amount flushed and it is still very effective

It is possible to set the flush volume on most 'traditional' syphon flush devices.

Yes I was being lazy. There us a thread adjustment determining the height at which the flow is cut off by the valve.

There is a slight advantage in my way of doing it though. Maintains a slightly higher head but uses a bit less volume.

Mine has two buttons -Pee button and Poo button.
If you can alter them I have no idea how to.
