hey guys, i'm not in any financial position to purchase anything yet but what is the lowest water cooling can go?

i can understand that triple fan radiators are better than single but surely they can't cool lower than 22'C or what ever the average room temp. is

without using phase changing and having to rob a bank to afford it is there any way to make water cooling cooler ?

Yep, you're correct, water cooling alone will never ever get temps below ambient, owing to the laws of thermodynamics. In reality, it's more like a few degrees above ambient, same as air cooling really.

What water cooling does well though is 'scale' better, as water is more efficient at removing heat from the source for transport to the radiator for cooling.

To get below ambient temps though, it's phase and the like I'm afraid.

as stated, cooling with a radiator can at best get you ambient temps (and thats almost impossible, expect atleast a few c above ambient for water temps)

and:

bongs, even a dreadfull bong with a huge res like mine holds water at ambient even with crazy load (3150mhz @ 1.675v?!?). well made bongs with a small enough res that theres a fast turnover of water can get you below ambient with ease.. there are reports of people getting a little condesation on blocks from bongs, but i have never seen myself.

to test the best you could achieve in theory with a bong: get a temp probe (digital, or mercuary/alcohol) wrap a few layers of toilet paper round it, dip inw ater and stick it in the draught from a fan for a few mins.

i cant explain the maths behind the lowest temps, i just dont understand it: but the lower the humidity of atmosphere the lower you can go with bongs (at higher water loss) given that its fairly humid int he uk, your not likely to get much more than 5-6c below ambient for water temps tho, but that could easily be 10c better than a rad in the same setup.

I'll have a go at explaining, but I don't know if it will make any sense. For water to evaporate, it needs to have enough energy, it therefore steals enough energy from surrounding atoms to enable it to break free (evaporate), therefore leaving the surrounding atoms cooler than they were originally. Or at least thats how I remember it from A-level Chemistry (only 5 years ago-ish)

oh, i understand the physics well enough, but its a horrible formula using the dew point and relative and absolute humidity and current air temp and who knows what else.

makes my eyes hurt :)

Go to the watercooling forum on XS, they have a few good posts on bongs

cheers for your replies guys.

i suppose its possible to take apart an old fridge or something and use the cooling element to chill water in the system.

although noise would be of an issue :p
