... That don't break the bank. Any suggestions?

Ideally mid-March next year. Looking for nice hot weather, warm sea etc.

While I'm not tight, I do like to make sure I don't just throw money away. I like to do my research before booking anything.

Flights to Bora Bora from UK are over £1500+ per person.
Flights to the Maldives are around £500.

So my question to OCUK forumites - Are there other similar destinations with cheaper flights that you would suggest/recommend?

Cancun is hot in March, cheapish flights, and a huge variety of accom

Edit: oh, I misunderstood what a water villa meant, I just thought it was a villa by the water :D

Check Bali out, and maybe other parts of Indonesia or Malaysia - flights that way can usually be had about the 500 mark... which I guess isn't any cheaper, but it's beautiful out there and everything is cheap once you are there...

Vila’s over the water are over rated for me they are quite often smaller and more expensive than those on the beach which gave the added bonus of being on the beach!
This. Had a villa in the Maldives and lolled at the n00bs in the water villas that had a 100 yard wooden deck to get to 'civilisation' whilst I sunbathed naked on my private beach/outdoor hot tub.

Exact same experience in the Maldives our Beach villa was private and massive those on stilts unless you were Uber rich and took the ones with butlers just felt like second best.

Yeah but you get to look through little windows at the sea life underneath!

I loved the water villa we stayed at, and being able to cool down in the sea without getting full of sand was awesome.

Some interesting points have been tabled so far.

I'm not a huge lover of sand so jumping straight into the water would be great. That being said, I'm sure a little beach nearby would be put to use.

We don't have our hearts set on the water villa, but that or a regular private villa like @dLockers mentioned would be awesome.

Kudadoo is just water villas. Nautilus has both beach and water which are the same size. Joali has quite a few different category rooms but I think the actual floor space is similar between beach and water villas.

We stayed in a water villa in the Maldives for my 40th. The water villa was as big as the beach villas with the added bonus of having a Jacuzzi, your own private sun deck with loungers and a ladder straight onto the house reef where you could see reef sharks, octopus and all manner of fish swim by. Took a sea plane transfer from Male which saved me suffering for an hour on a boat which was a relief

Resurrecting this one as I need to start putting plans into place soon. Hopefully the bump will bring in some more forumite experiences.

Maldives seems most likely. Will look at Bali, Cape Verde and others to compare costs too.

Cancun/Mexico would be my vote. Sure a water villa would be amazing but would quickly get bored no?

Stayed in Playa del Carmen which isnt too far from akumal beach amongst other things

Thanks, I hadn't considered Mexico. I've had the impression it is quite unsafe and corrupt - not through research though so I'm happy to be persuaded otherwise.
Yeah I think it would get boring just staying in a villa so excursions, landmarks, attractions etc would be great.

We felt pretty safe and got around on the shuttle buses used by locals. I think the touristy areas are pretty safe.

Where we stayed we had good access to cenotes, tulum, akumal, xcaret park (a must) and wasn't too far into cancun for a visit

Chichen itza would be a day trip

Well worth looking into

We stayed in a water bungalow in the Maldives and loved it. Back then the resort was call Hakura Huraa and was a seaplane trip from Male.
Love the Maldives but I like diving & missus just sunbathes but if you like relaxing it's excellent, but if you like action you may find it a trifle boring.
Quite sobering looking at the markings on the walls showing the height of the tsunami wave from 2004. :-(

Those who stayed in an overwater bungalow or beach villa - did you go for a package deal or arrange flights and accommodation separately?

Just got back last week from Cora Cora in the Maldives, chose a water bungalow this time as friends had never stayed in one.
This time was a lot nicer than the last one we stayed in at Kuramathi so it pays to look around.

What did you think of Cora Cora overall? How was the food/house reef etc?

Just arranged for flights and accom separately and almost always do with any holiday. I dislike the cancellation terms on most package holidays.

I reckon the house reef was the only let down compared to other places, because it was quite tidal when the tide went out it was awkward to do any decent snorkelling. Then I did some of the best Scuba diving out of the other places Ive been in the Maldives.
The place itself was excellent, really good food, plenty of choice and a good choice of beers :Dwith superb staff who genuinely couldn't do enough for you.
Also worth noting, one of our party cut his foot, which needed stitches. Doctor on site stitched it, gave him a tetanus shot and antibiotics/painkillers etc all included in the price, didn't even need to show any insurance etc
