WD Elements External 1TB

Only stating the obvious I suppose, but try and treat it as if it were made of precious china... don't subject it to sudden extreme acceleration (ie "don't drop it"), and don't move it when it's in operation. The majority of failing HDD problems on tech forums seem to involve external drives, which by their very nature tend to lead a much harder life than their internal counterparts.

The model itself looks decent enough, as with all USB drives the speed limiting factor will be the interface itself (about 30-35MB/sec at best). Having said that, if portability is a main concern, unless you really need 1TB of storage you might also want to consider a 2.5" USB-bus powered model - they're more expensive per GB and only go up to 500GB at present, but they're much smaller, lighter, handier and you won't also have to cart a power supply around with you. :)
