I have a Western Digital Elements external drive that I bought from here a few months back (can't see it listed anymore, I guess they discontinued it) but i'm having a few problems with it. I have a habit of either powering it off or pulling out the USB cable without realising its still doing anything, and as such each time I did so the drive 'ballsed up' a bit - but if I plugged it in and left it for a while Windows usually did a pretty good job of fixing whatever I managed to corrupt in the process and restored the drive and my files to their former glory.

However, I did it again purely by accident (for once) and now it has problems. It is recognised fine in Windows, correct name etc, adds itself as a drive in My Computer etc etc. but as soon as I click to explore it I get "E:\ is not accessible due to an I/O device error".

Is this a corruption error or is the disk actually buggered? I don't want to have to format the drive unless completely necessary (it has most of my uncompressed music projects on it :(), so if there is some easy software solution for scanning and fixing a drive I would very much appreciate any ideas!

go to the western digital website and check their FAQ for your drive, pretty sure it tells you how to retrieve date from drive, plus other solutions for faulty drives.
