Im upgrading to windows 7 next week :)

atm im using vista-64bit on a maxtor 250GB for boot and 500GB WD for games and stuff.

Im defiantly getting a Samsung SpinPoint F3 1TB for storage well thats the plain

Now i need a new drive for just windows 7 boot atm im think of using a WD 500GB Black "32MB" Cache which seem a good deal to me ?

But should i just use the samsung 1TB for everything or should i get two new drives ?

Also how good is RAID 0 ?

The sammy is the fastest 7200rpm conventional drive on the market, as far as I'm aware. You'd be plain daft to use a slower drive as the boot drive.

I'd get two sammy F3s, if you can spare £120. Use 150gb of the first for boot, and the second for files. Then backup the second onto the first.

You get the best of both worlds - the best speed you're likely to get, the security of a backup and seperation of files and OS (less seeking)

If you can't afford an SSD, it's the way to go.

Or what about a F3 500GB for boot and have use a F3 1TB or extra storage/games and data ?

which would be faster tho F3 / WD Black 500GB drives becasue Samsung has 32MB cache and wd black only has 16MB cache ?

Maybe get 2 500GB F3's and raid 0 them and use the 500GB you have to backup your data?
My 2x 500GB f3's in RAID0.

The Samsung F3 will be faster than the WD Black as the F3 has 500gb platters compared to the WD having only 333gb. Need to wait for WD to update their range.

I'd be using 3x 500gb drives and I was drawn to the blacks because of the daul core aspect and double the cache but obviously when you raid the sumsungs you'd still get 32md over two which at the moment there's a good ratio to overall speed and cache which if I went for the blacks I'd have 96mb which is overkill.

Think I'd be getting the F3's now.

Samsung are the trend setters for price/reliabiltity/performance.

edit: be nice seeing an HD tune screen of the blacks though.

Cache makes pretty much no difference to a drives speed. The same goes for dual controllers, the WD Black was only the tiniest bit faster than the F1 for all it's 'superior technology.' It all comes down to platter density and firmware.

Thanks guys i'll get the F3 500GB for win7 and later get F3 1TB or i'll just keep my wd 500gb i have atm

But tho i have all my games on my wd atm so when i get my f3 i wont need to re-install all my games again or will i ?

Depends on the game. Some will run fine if you just copy them, others will need to be reinstalled or have registry entries from HKLM & HKCU\Software listing the install directory recreated.

is there any speed difference between the 1tb and the 500gb with the f3.

such as for the same price I could get 3x 500gb / 2x 1tb.

obviously the 3 would be raided faster but have less storage but overall if I spent the extra £60 to get a third 1tb would it be faster as opposed to the 500's?
