Hi everyone.

Just bought a WD Red not so long ago, and while it works, i find it makes this really annoying clicking noise every 3-5 seconds.

Should i get it replaced?

I did have a sound like that a while ago with my iMac and a few weeks later the hard drive packed up, one of the bearings had gone in it, though that was more a whirr followed by a click. Make sure everything is backed up etc if not already. How long have you had it?

It's waking up from sleep,it whines then clicks? It's the platters spinning up

Can turn it off in advanced power saving profile hdd sleep

Can you record the noise and stick a YouTube video up that way can let you know if it's a normal click or a drive that's faulty. Drives should not click at all, unless as wazza said if it's starting up from sleep or a system start and should be only one click and a sound that sounds like the drive is spinning up.

my rig is ultra silent so i can really hear it. However, since i disabled hdd sleep and performed a reboot it has now gone. Perhaps a bit early so say, but if that fixed it, THANK YOU SO MUCH :D

Yes that drive is on it's way out from that sound, it's either trying to reallocate bad sectors or it's basically what is called the click of death when it does that knocking sound as it's doing in your video. The knocking click sounds on hard drives always indicates the drive is about to fail badly soon, so take any data off it that you need and RMA it mate.

If you have CrystalDiskInfo run it and check it's health state and stick a screenshot up, you can get it from here if not http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html .

The click of death normally happens when the hard drive heads cannot tell where the tracks required are on the platter(s). This causes the heads to keep moving until the actuator arm that holds the heads hit a physical stop. The click of death sound that you hear is the sound made when the actuator arm hits the stop. The stop is there to stop the reader heads from leaving the platter(s).

Here's a video of it. Should I RMA it?

Had this on my 3TB green and i own 3 of them, I got it replaced and now its ok. I think its the drive on its way out as my other 2 3rb ED green did not do this clicking sound and the one that did just started doing it.

I found a lot of people saying its on its way out and get it replaced which i did and now its fine.

also you might notice if you put your finger on the drive it might vibrate more than another drive which is what i found out to it seems to vibrate a lot more

hope this helps

off to order 2x4tb greens to replace my 2 samsung f4 2tbs, need more space, lol

is it not weird that it only does it in hwmonitor???

Read this... Seems strange that one and WD drive too.:confused:

Try CrystalDiskInfo and screenshot the drive status and add here, also try fully uninstalling hwmonitor too it could be causing some compatibility problem with WD drives and making their actuator arm hit the stop on and off which causes the clicking and of course is not good for the drive this behavior.

Just upload the screenshots to http://tinypic.com/ it's easier ;).

Okay from that screenshot the drive looks perfectly healthy and no need to RMA it. So it's hwmonitor causing your problem and it seems to do a pretty good impersonation of a dying drive that program with WD drives. I would avoid hwmonitor or turn off any drive related stuff in its settings that keep accessing the drive for information and see if it stops the clicking.
