One of my two WD5000AAKS broke and I was wondering If anyone can say the Raid Edition drives are better, more relianble drives?

Would it be OK to raid(mirror) the RE with the SE drive for the time being, untill I can see that happens from the RMA?
Western Digital RE2 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5001ABYS)

Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD5000AAKS)

Man I hate harddrives :(

The Raid Edition drives are designed to be in use 24/7 so they should be more reliable than the Caviars. You can mix drives of any model or make as long as they're the same capacity.

As Snapshot says the RE drives are supposed to be run continuously, however if this is your first AAKS to fail it shouldn't be taken as a sign that they aren't any good or anything like that - hard drives fail occasionally, mechanical devices will always have that problem.

I was mistaken this drive is actually only 5 months old (Oct 07), having received a dead drive before and this drive not really being moved and kept below 30C I think its partially just bad luck.
I might start chucking drives tho once Ive finished with them In one PC.

Ive ordered a RE drive tho and might be able to copy off my more important stuff(once Ive installed a second OS on another drive) as it seems to be failing at different times.

I currently have 4 x WD5000AAKS drives and I have to say that they are great. They have never failed me. Well, one of them started making a small buzzing noise and I effortlessly Advance RMAed that with WD :)
