Website Host

I think we should bring this back on topic. He asked for a website host, not a bashing on his use of brackets - there's a thread in GD for that!

Dreamhost is good (I used it for a year) But I also like Surpass.

If you can find some promo codes for Dreamhost you'll be flying.

I got a years hosting + free domain for something like £20 for the entire year. Fantasic amount of space and bandwidth.

500GB of space & 5TB of bandwidth.

overselling without a doubt, the company i woork for doesnt even provide that amount of space and bandwidth with its dedicated servers!

On another forum I'm on a lot of people use it for various things and use well over 1.5TB a month and it still runs strong.

The majority of people won't use that much, but its nice knowing it won't die if you host a large file for a public forum.

I only joined for a year for the free domain and the fact it only cost $20 for the whole year, never had any problems.

Dreamhost oversell to an extent (they have to to remain competitive) but in the few occasions I've heard of where people have managed to use up 1TB+ a month bandwidth Dreamhost have been perfectly okay with it. They used to have some rather overzealous CPU limits but they've since been removed, which makes it more than possible to use what you pay for. It's even better combined with the fact that they give you far more goodies than any other host I've seen at the price-point (SSH, SVN, WebDAV, Jabber, tons of other stuff) IMO.

If you are using a HTML site, fair enough, but a php/sql heavy site on Dreamhost is utter trash, a server with so many clients on can purely not run things like Invision Power Board and the like.

Their control panel is a bunch of non standard ******** as well.

lol at ^^

anyone got any suggestions for a cheap US hosting .. i might be looking to use one for a video-dump ground. Loads of bandwidth and space but not much else - perfect. Who knows of one?

Pretty much Dreamhost. They don't seem to care what you upload.

Also, how do you make extra cPanel accounts?

Erm, yes I do, unless dreamhost have magically converted to cpanel in the last few weeks, their control panel is homemade stuff which I can't stand.

Also, if you compare 2 sites, one running on dreamhost, and another on a GOOD, non oversold shared host, the speed difference is amazing, esspecially on php/mysql heavy sites.

Angus mate, im not calling you mental(well, i sorta am[maybe its something a doctor could help with?{maybe OCD? <or maybe yours just nuts? "or maybe its just attention? 'GET HELP'">}])

:p ;)

I will decide what is "inefficient use of funds" for myself. (From information gathered on forums, I expect you have an extremely limited idea of what I need [or possibly {in other terms, a relatively high probability} will need] the "webspace" for [and thus I do not value your post {in this case}]).
Not only do you manage to tick people off with an irritatingly stupid writing style, you also insult them?

You're posting (poorly) on a public internet forum buddy. If people want to give you their opinion they will. If you don't like people telling you things you consider to be of "no value", then don't bloody post.

O/T: I've used Dreamhosts in the past, and they were good. Also used Fasthosts, never had a problem with them.
