I've been writing an ebook which I'm looking to sell. I'm currently in the process of writing it and building a website, but I wan't to buy the .com domain before anyone else gets their hands on it.

I'm a total newbie regarding domains registering and website hosting.

Do web hosts register domains or do you have to do them with different companies?

I'm hoping the website will have 4-5 pages with an ordering section where people will be able to pay with debit/credit/paypal and then download the ebook. I'm after a .com domain name and I'd be wanting a few emails with it aswell with fowarding to a gmail account.

How much am I looking at paying and which company should I go with?

Recommendations/advice please. :)

some offer an all in one service

godaddy.com for the cheapest domain name registrar (less than a fiver)
surpasshosting for the cheapest hosting (a couple quid a month)
more email accounts/space/bandwidth than you'll ever need

Godaddy - domains

Hosting - 000webhost is free but a bit on the slow side
Vidahost is arguably the best shared hosting, but a little more expensive
than some. You could look up the OC host review

Yea, I've been looking at ochostreview.

So I can register my domain with godaddy, then host my site at my chosen .com domain with a completely different company?

I've been with EUK Host for over a year now.

Really good value for money packages and as far as I can tell from my own experience, their customer support is second to none. ;)

Have a look at them:-

You could, yeah.

But in most cases it saves a shedload of hassle to register domains with the company you use for hosting.

Price, for a start!!! :p

Plays a big factor in it.

I'm on a Platinum package with EUK, unlimited addon domains etc, CPanel on a linux based server with a good few add ons through Fantastico.

Serves my needs quite well.

To be honest, and this is going to sound a bit strange, I know the difference betwen the 3 types but I would end up tying myself up in knots trying to explain it, so maybe someone else can do so.

I've recently gone with registron.co.uk, they offer domains as well as webspace.

I'm just on the basic plan here as I only need it for emails and some online files. The payments are yearly so easy to manage.

TSOHost gets a lot of good reviews on ochostreview.co.uk, registron.co.uk are run by the same people.

Did a "Copy and Paste" job to after finding this on Google:-

Shared Web Hosting
Under shared hosting, an owner's Web site is placed on the same server as hundreds of other sites. This is generally the least cost option. A shared hosting often restricts the functionality an owner can design into a Web site. If properly handled many companies can offer excellent shared hosting environments such as eMax Hosting. We do not overload our servers as many other companies do.

Reseller Hosting
Reseller hosting is targeted for those who want to operate as Web hosts themselves. A customer - the reseller - buys a large amount of server space and bandwidth which are then on-sold to Web site owners. Typically, one reseller's account is placed on the same server with other reseller accounts on a shared hosting basis, but there are fewer accounts overall.
The difference is, with a reseller account, you get the freedom to create an unlimited number of full-featured hosting accounts. Each account you create will have it's own Cpanel control panel.

Dedicated Hosting
Under dedicated hosting, a web site owner is allocated exclusive use of an entire server. There are no restrictions, except for those designed to maintain the integrity of the Web host's network (for instance, banning adult content due to the increase risk of hacker attack). This option is more expensive than shared hosting.

Thanks for that Draeger.

So, if I want to sell my ebook from my website and I'm looking at anywhere between 500-10,000 hits in a month, could I get away with shared hosting?

I would suggest that would be perfectly feasible.

At last count, I had over a dozen websites for clients hosted on my shared Platinum account. Some of the sites get a large amount of hits per month and one has a thriving and popular SMF based forum installed on it that gets used every day.

So yeah, your eBook sales should be fine on a shared package.

Wait before you decide on what to go for though, as there are lots of people in the "know" here on the OcUK forums when it comes to this sort of thing, I'm sure they will chip in shortly on the subject.

FWIW, I pay £69.99 per year for the package I'm on at the moment.

Value for money, considering the service and options you get with that as I already mentioned, is quite unbeatable in my opinion. ;)

If you're a novice at the type of things then I would spend a little extra and go with Vidahost. A starter package would do you fine. Last time I looked it was £30+vat for 1 yr. Here's why I think they are good: they have a free phone number, their support is top notch (i've had replies back at 3:00am when I had left an email at midnight), they'd helped me out with setting things up. It's the support that really stands out. I have been with them since pretty much when they started and have never felt the need to move.
