Weekend Football Thread *spoilers be inside*

Also, why doesn't the "best league in the world" dominate the EUFA lol league?

Because it's a mickey mouse competition that no team in this country takes seriously (and yet still Newcastle almost won it)

Better tactics? or just willing to sacrifice football to win and get more money.

DEFENDING IS PART OF FOOTBALL. If they got their tactics right and won....then they have better tactics. Not sure how much more I can say this without you blindly ignoring it.

That everyone else seems to take seriously? It's still a European Cup.

I know that defending is part and parcel of football, Attacking teams manage it just fine, why do English clubs put such effort into defending? because they aren't as good going forward?

Brasil have let in the least goals in the World Cup? They're a good attacking side. Barcalona have let in the least goals in their league? they are a good attacking side?

Chelsea playing with 10 men behind the ball against Barca is defending, doesn't somehow make it a good tactic or way to play football.

I'd rather see teams attack and challenge each other, not just sit back and defend.

The Newcastle team that 'almost won it', was the 3rd best team in England the previous season (better than Liverpool and Chelsea), with Shearer, Bellamy, Robert, Woodgate, Given etc. It's hardly evidence it's a mickey mouse competition. Just because teams like Villa (who will struggle to win other trophies) don't take it seriously doesn't mean much. Look at recent winners: Sevilla, Valencia, Zenit and Liverpool all good teams.

English teams don't take it seriously because The Premiership is simply more prestigious.

Because there is more money in the Premiership, see.

It's whats wrong with English football imo, you decide to try and gain another 1/2 places in the League because of the money, instead of winning an European Cup :(

To be fair - the clubs are a business, and those 1 or 2 places (I guess you didnt mean 1/2 a place ;)) probably pay more than getting to the final and winning the mickey mouse Euro cup

with nearly every squad player expecting £20k minimum a week, English teams NEED those places

I know Real (and probably Barca) make a fortune out of selling shirts - but I wonder how many other clubs in La Liga sell even nearly as many as they do (after all this is seemingly a major reason why they can afford to buy several £50m + players in one season)

Ie - If you can afford to go for Prestige instead of financial gain, then good on you - but I doubt many clubs can do that;)

Just a thought

Flip side, wouldn't winning a European Cup bring in more fans? sell more things?

Maybe be able to sell a player for over the top money? Bring in young players who want to play for a club in Europe?

The average wage iirc at Manchester United was 23/24k < I doubt that the teams in the EUFA league are playing their squad players that much.

I think teams should set out to try and win every game they play, be that the League, FA Cup, League Cup or in a European game.

The Uefa league is taken seriously by everyone else other then the English teams.

I'm not sure where this idea that English clubs don't care about the Uefa Cup/Europa League has come from. I can only think of Villa who rested/left players out. The reason why English sides haven't been that successful in it (and you've got to remember than Newcastle done well a few years back and Boro got to the final a year or so before that too) is because the standard of English sides entering haven't been the greatest.

Prior to this season, the gap between the top 4 and the rest of the EPL has been huge. English sides have on the whole been the strongest sides in the CL for the last 5 years but where (other than Barca) Spains top 4 have been lacking, they have had another 2 or 3 clubs of equal quality to Real, Valencia, Sevilla etc playing in the Uefa Cup.

Also, this idea that an extra 1 or 2 league places is worth more money that a run in the Europa League, unless those 1 or 2 places mean qualifying for the CL then that's nonsense. You get around an extra £500k per League place, and even if you ignore prize money, extra tv revenue, sponsorship clauses etc, in gate receipts alone a club like Everton (confirmed by their CEO the other day) make £800k per home game. A couple of rounds in the Europa League is worth far more than 2 league places in terms of revenue.

Didn't Bolton also completely sack it off and play a second-string side in the UEFA Cup?

I can't remember who else has actually played in it, in recent times :p

Ah here we go

"The irony," noted Martin O'Neill, "is we broke our necks to get into Europe." The Aston Villa manager was commenting on his decision to pursue their European campaign, which began in the Intertoto Cup in July, by fielding a reserve team in Moscow tonight. With Harry Redknapp doing the same with Tottenham at White Hart Lane it is tempting to wonder why teams strain so hard to enter the Uefa Cup in the first place. Last season Bolton Wanderers reached the last 16 only to deploy a second-string team in a winnable tie at Sporting Lisbon.

WOW!

People saying over on Deva Chat that on local news they saying Chester will know their fate in the next 24 hours. I can't confirm as I'm not home so don't get that news. Will have to text my brother.

They have a game tomorrow!!!

Fair point but all 3 clubs had unique circumstances; Villa werer trying to hang on to a CL spot which would have been far more valuable and a far greater footballing prize, Spurs had a Cup final at the weekend and Bolton were in a relegation battle which like Villa, was worth far more to them in both football and financial terms.

IINM both Bolton and Spurs had previously played strong sides in the competition.

sorry but aren't a lot of the teams that have done well in the uefa cup teams that have ballsed up in the premier competition of the champions league? so if united/liverpool/chelsea/arsenal all got through they are precluded from playing in the 2nd tier competition. leaving our 5th 6th and 7th clubs to carry the mantle.

could be wrong i don't follow it religiously.

also, i take it you'd like me to change this sig Baz?

Latest news is that Chester have NOT been able to give Vauxhall Motors and Wrexham the money they owe.

No official news still, wonder if The Conference will throw them out...
