I'm probably late to the party with this but...

The thing that got me about Shearer's appointment was that a selection of Newcastle fans said things like "I don't care if we go down as long as he's in charge" or "He won't be at fault, whatever happens". For me this is a shocking mentality to take, not caring about Premiership survival as long as Shearer is the boss..

come on, I mean that's just stupid, honestly some of this stuff I swear is made up

I personally couldn't give a monkey's about Shearer, I was a bit gutted after Keegan walked as things looked nice and midtable, I still say he's to blame when we go down.

For me this is a shocking mentality to take, not caring about Premiership survival as long as Shearer is the boss. It seems like some Newcastle fans have already selected their scapegoat and have admitted defeat, there is still time to save their season but it feels like they'd rather just blame Ashley and go down.

I'd like to see Shearer keep them up, but then I think we might be in for a few of their players if they go down :p.

I agree, I've not herd many Newcastle fans that say they are dissapointed about Shearer coming in and that they don't mind going down with him in charge.

Funny.
I can see most of their squad leaving and then having to rebuild and push for promotion from a League that is ******* hard to get out of.

I personally don't think Ashley is 100% to blame, I think the fans have something to do with the state the club is currently in.

I don't think it's down to the fans at all. There was always going to be rumours about him being appointed when it looked like Newcastle would finish the season managerless. Ashley made the decision because he thought it would lift the players and the club out of the relegation zone based on his status as former star and captain of the club. It hasn't worked. There is still time but it looks like an impossible task.

These games slipping by just increase the pressure to perform in the next game and unfortunately for Newcastle they don't have enough players fighting for them. Some of them truly don't grasp what is at stake and I'm looking at some of the foreigners when I say that. It also amazes me that some people can instantly gauge whether Shearer will be a good manager or not based on a few games.

Ashley tried to sell the club because he fell out with the fans, I don't think Keegan / Shearer were appointments to try and do the team good. I think they were just to get the fans on side.

*btw Shearer could be a great manager, I just don't agree with managers walking in to jobs at a high level, go manager lower league teams, get some expirence.

Good post. Especially the last sentence, I've even heard some Newcastle fans starting write him off already.

He took probably the hardest job in the PL at the time and whilst he hasn't set the world on fire he has made some nice changes.

Next season we'll get to see the real Shearer (if he stays on), when he'll get to build his own team and implement his own tactics. Even one full season isn't even enough to be fair though, he might take 2-3 like Robson and many other managers.

I'm not saying he's gonna be a success, he could be an absolute failure but like you say Linoge, there's no point judging him at this stage.

Don't you think that it was a poor appointment ?
An unproven manager coming into a club who are going to need to win every game left to stay up. I don't care about who you are, I'd rather have a manager with a nice CV.

I don't think Shearer was the correct man for the job, Ashley should have appointed someone who has expirence, and can just do a job while Joe Kin is out. Shearer, if he wants to be considered a good manager should start at a lower league club. Much like Keane, Ince, et al.

I have no idea what the future holds for Newcastle, but they need a seriously big clear out come the end of the season.

Who the **** is he going to play there?

**** me.
Funny, I knew if I dared to criticise anything that happened in the match you'd be ready to pounce on it in a shot.

I happen to think forcing one of your best attcking players back into a defensive role is a waste for a team that desperately needs wins. Sue me.

Agree 100%

Duff is one of the better attacking threats Newcastle have, making him play at the back is a waste of his talents.

Referee Howard Webb has admitted he was wrong to award Manchester United a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, according to former official Dermot Gallagher.

Webb found himself at the centre of mass controversy at the weekend after penalising Spurs glove-man Heurelho Gomes for an alleged foul on Michael Carrick.

Cristiano Ronaldo despatched the spot-kick, allowing Sir Alex Ferguson's side to come from 2-0 down to triumph 5-2 and remain firmly on course for a third consecutive Premier League crown.

Television replays clearly showed Gomes won the ball inside the danger-zone, with the dubious decision slammed after the match by both Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp and midfielder Jermaine Jenas.

However, former referee Gallagher has revealed that Webb has admitted he got the decision wrong.

"I talked to Howard and he knows he made a mistake," he said.

"He didn't think the goalkeeper had got the ball. He thought that Carrick had touched the ball sideways and then the goalkeeper brought him down.

"I don't think it was an easy decision as people say it was, but it's clear to anyone that it was a mistake.

"But these things can happen to anyone and I think it's important we move on from it.

"Anyone could have fallen foul of making a mistake like that, we've all done it. Punishing him won't do him any good and it won't do the clubs any good either, because the game is over now.

"Of course he won't lose the FA Cup final. It was one decision in his career and you have to accept that people make mistakes."

Keeper also knocks the ball after he touches it. I'd still say depends on the ref who'd give it. Plus the fact it was against Redknapp, stone wall ;)

I think it was an incredibly difficult call, the touch is so minute. Had he not touched it and the penalty been waved away then people would be just as incensed. I don't think it really made a difference to the result (the score yes, result I'm not so sure about) It isn't like United were heavily on the back foot and it came against the run of play, we were entirely dominant and a goal was coming.

Spurs fans are harping on about this massive injustice, let them complain about it.

From where Webb was, he even said it looked a stone wall penalty.

Spurs fans are just trying not to think about how their team lost a two goal lead and collapsed in a truley embarassing style.
