Weekend work - Ideas please

Surely you don't need to know WHY he wants it, to give advice? He's not asking for counselling on his life choices after all.

It's difficult to respond to "I've booked myself three international holidays but I just don't have enough money" without a little curiosity about the circumstances.

So it is always 'worth it' to have a second job

In terms of making a net monetary gain, yes. But if you're just taking a time filler job at low wage, the actual gain might not be worth the time investment. So not necessarily always "worth" it.

One little caveat in your situation. You said you are in the 40% tax band already with your first job.

Then with a 2nd job I imagine they would put you on BR and tax any income at 20% - but you should be paying 40% on it, so at the end of the year you will owe the 20% extra tax on the 2nd income.

If everything's declared and above board, etc, then HMRC will issue you a second tax code such that you will pay higher rate on the second job via PAYE, there won't be an extra bill at the end of the year. Obviously that's massively dependent on the OP's current tax situation.

if you already in the 40% band any extra weekend work you'll be getting 40% tax...

Enjoy the ~£3.50 per hour (after tax) to meet your "savings goal"

Of course not. But it's certainly interesting that an individual who is in a high tax band job, whom already works 40 hours in a Monday to Friday week, in a position his career reflects, finds himself wanting for mindless weekend work to reach a mild savings goal. Assuming here, that the OP, who is in his mid-twenties, who works full time wants to spend his only free time working rather than doing something enjoyable, would rather save.

I'm predicting the OP is single since he's working a lot time and has no family commitments since he can work 6/7 days a week?

So no, we don't need to know WHY he wants it, but we're still allowed to be curious :D

I don't mind saying why haha. I am leaving the country in December to go traveling. I wanted a nice big net to land on in case something went wrong in Oz for example. But being greedy I have booked lots of little trips and I knew I was cutting holes in that net each time.

The net is still there, but not as sturdy as before.

So, I don't mind working my little butt off for a few months on the weekends to repair that net.

If I don't, I still have enough, just not the nice net :)

-so you net 60% of a £6.50 job
-nets you ~£3.90
-To gain £1000 you work 250 hours in said job

RIP

Currently working in a similar job as a student I can recommend not doing it for £4 an hour lol

Well,

At the higher rate you will be losing most of a minimum wage job (pretty much all part time weekend work is) - so to do some very basic napkin maths.

Goal - £1000
Wage - Apr £6 Per hour (£3.60 per hour after tax).

So 278 hours of work, or 8 hours a weekend for the next 35 weeks.

Obviously it would be worse than that, as you will have to pay transportation costs etc.

Can you offer web-design services?, sell your bum to old men?, do you have any other skills which could be offered?

*Note, I didn't check what the minimum wage was before posting this*

Yes, I did mean just in net monetary gain terms :)

As to whether it's 'worth it' in times of your own time/reward, then of course that is a decision only you alone can make.

If everything's declared and above board, etc, then HMRC will issue you a second tax code such that you will pay higher rate on the second job via PAYE, there won't be an extra bill at the end of the year.

Ahh that's good to know, I haven't ever come across this situation before, someone in the higher tax band taking a second low paid job ;)

depends how much you have but I'd take all 3 holidays and just scrimp slightly on your last one. Better to travel to multiple locations (especially if all tickets are bought!). Not worth working for that amount.

Enjoy your travels :p

Job that puts you in the 40% tax bracket yet you need a weekend job because you have really, truly, horribly mismanaged your finances. Ouch.

Yea, this is the other option.

And I still have time to postpone the big one way ticket trip, but if I do, I miss out on Oz summer haha.

As I could postpone it a month, leave around new years time and miss out :(

Little exaggeration there mate haha. My finances are in bloody good nick thank you.

But every penny helps...

Bar work, its available any and everywhere. Monday to Sunday, morning, afternoon and evening. I have currently left my job, but was working 36 hours a week on £8 an hour, even after the most basic of tips takes it to £10 an hour, certain weeks my tips would take it to £12/15 an hour.
However I grew up / live in central London, so doubt you'd get the same deal in Reading.

Hmmm, that is a terrible wage! Well I could try and find a weekend technical role.
Ay,

Obviously try to find something with a wage which is at least reasonably close (pro-rata) to the kind of higher rate wage job you are doing currently (otherwise you will be working for peanuts).

This will be hard mind, as most technical roles are full time (from my experience, or part time during the week & closed for weekends).

Do you have any other marketable skills?. (you could try ebay trading, gumtree trading - but it has a risk of earning you nothing).

Jesus, does no one read the threads? haha

The more money I have, the more fool proof my future trip will be. As it stands, I have done what I always enjoy doing, seeing new places. But as a result, the last couple have dipped into my savings. Thus I would like to regenerate that. You then might think "why not just save more?". Because I would rather enjoy the little things and just work a little harder. Just who I am.

At the moment, I'm looking at weekend work to regenerate that area I dipped into.

My finances are fine, I am beyond comfortable. So yes, I guess you could say I'm greedy, but I don't mind working hard to enjoy the things in life.

It's hardly like I'm struggling to live all of a sudden haha.

Anyway, to those offering decent and useful advice, thanks. Will take the ideas on board.

If it is money to fall back on in an emergency when traveling, just get a credit card and pay it off when back from your trip?

I don't think working every single day from now until December (except your holidays) will very nice.
