Evening all!

I was driven into work today by one of my collegues and noticed a weird noise coming from his engine when he switched it off (approx 20 seconds after off).

Opened the bonnet and fired it up again. It seems to be coming from a small grey metal circular bit on the right hand side of the camshaft (between the two cams, looking rearwards). Marked with Siemens on it. Almost sounds like an elctric motor/gears on it's way out(!). Any idea what this bit does? Fairly familiar with engines but not DOHC motors, and not this new either!

The car is a 2003 2.2 Signum.

Sounds a bit modern to me! My old beast is 15 years old and haven't been involved in newer engines.

So what exactly does this do? If it does fail, what sort of cost is it for the part?

On a 15 year old car: The fuel vapour from evaporation in the tank is directed (usually through the fuel cap) into a charcoal canister where it is stored. A valve allows the vapour into the intake manifold on the over-run (the leanest part of the running of the engine) where it is burned.

Because emissions from parts other than the exhaust count too, in the past the vapour just vented to atmosphere out the fuel tank breather.

If it fails; who cares?

Probably, it's not uncommon for the things to make noise shortly after stopping the engine.

It's worth keeping an eye in here in case it's actually a common fault of some other kind that someone knows about.

Crikey, you should hear the noises my ST makes as I turn it off - various things shutting down etc. Most notable is the electric PAS pump.
