Well I fell down the custom keyboard world.

It wears very easily, despite being really careful my 75% is showing some signs of wear. No problems with meletrix, keychron etc

Do you mean like where you rest your palm, like sweat marks?

I think I will have to go Silver then, red might get old fast.

Oh, that's like paint coming off. My Keychron don't have that.

Yup, not happy about it, if it was just one place I could probably blame myself, but sadly it appears to appearing on another edge as well (not pictured)

BTW, long shot, do you have a Mac?

I can't seem to find any references on how to switch the QK Alice to Mac. Their website says yes, but I can't see any way to switch between the 2 systems.

No not a mac fan tbh, have look at the qk config software I'd have thought there was an option

The Alice is too new, so it is not listed under that yet. https://www.qwertykeys.com/pages/fw

I think I will wait a bit before buying. Not worth the $20 saving for a non-compatible keyboard. My issue is that because the keyboard is basically a 65%, without the Fn key, I can't use the number role as a 2nd layer as the F key which I am used to.

I tried today put in a regular wired Dell PC keyboard into my work Mac mini and it doesn't detect the Fn key at all, it does nothing....which concerns me a bit.

Maybe send an email to Jae at proto?

Have you checked if there is a firmware update on their website and then installed the JSON for Mac layout using VIA?

EDIT: Reading back, I'm assuming you have. Could be worth emailing them about it or seeing if there are any forums/discord with an answer. I've found links to JSON files there before which have solved my issues.

I messaged QK and they confirmed it is compatible with Mac.

However QK won’t ship the keyboard directly to the UK, which sucks because the current exchange rate, even if accounting for VAT and duty at the border when arriving is less than ordering through Prototypist.

QK has confirmed that this is a in stock product for up to a year too but i don’t know if Prototypist themselves will stock it though and the pre-order period ends tomorrow.

I just read Prototypist's site more carefully and they call this a "group buy"....it might not be an in stock item if that's the case and that means I have to order it before tomorrow?

If it's a GB then you're just getting in early and with the specs you want.

They're likely to have some level of 'pre order' (potentially) and then 'in stock' but the in stock would be defined kits. Ie. You would choose Kit number 1, which was a certain combo/spec etc.. and they would have limited numbers.

I think it comes down to, if you want a certain layout and can wait, then go for the GB to be safe. PT are excellent and I've never had an issue with them, comms (as well as access to info) are incredible as well.

To clarify on GB. Yes, there is a closing date and you are effectively pre-paying and then waiting.

It's the suppliers way of getting guarenteed numbers so they know capacity and costings. Vendors usually buy some kits to then sell on themselves which would become either pre-order or in-stock.

There are usually 'rounds' of these QK boards (and others) as well, so if you missed the boat this time, you could potentially get the 'R2' a year from now etc..

I think I will go with the GB because out of the 10 colours, I am only happy with only the Anodised ones, so that's only half the choices, and I want a flex board with PC and matching wrist rest....The fact that I only love 2 of the 8 colours makes it even harder.

I think I will just stump up the cash to pre-order it tonight.

Anyone have a discount code for prototypist? lol

I asked him and PO and group buy, he replied with the following, but I don't quite understand what he means by monthly batches. I guess he orders a batch every month from them in China and will add Alice to the order sheet?

Hi Raymond

It will have some units in stock after the pre-order ships out but we will likely open it up in our monthly batches of QK and Neo products as well.

The May batch will launch today/tomorrow and I’ll see if we can add the QK Alice to it.

Cheers

Jae

Edit, after a few email exchanges about order I've placed an order, now I got to wait like 8 weeks! I will spend time to look for a set of keycaps that goes well with Silver, was going to go emerald green a set call Emma, but at £90 and ABS plastic, I just couldn't do it. I love the feel of PBT too much.

For the Emma caps, were you after a fully green set? - Because I looked and saw the green/white combo which I thought looked pretty cool, but you'd also need the 'alpha' set for that (just checking in case that had passed you by!)

Personally, I'm not too deep down the rabbit hole yet, but the generic GMK dupes I got from the forest seem pretty good to me, for the ~£22 they cost!

I did see it but the cost of both + shipping, was starting to get silly. I thought the green suits silver boards well after seeing this one.

I just ordered this tonight, £48. PBT caps, Polycarbonate for the clear, there are enough solid colour caps to not use any transparent caps. But I might use a couple. I think the green accents goes well with a silver board.

Those look cool! I didn't want to spend the £100+ for genuine GMKs, but the no-name dupes look pretty nice on my board (it's in this thread somewhere). They're doubleshot 'nightshade' clones and would describe as a bit more clacky than thocky, but I'm very happy with the board overall.
I'm not sold on the Alice/split idea (and am overly attached to UK ISO format!), but look forward to seeing your views on them - The silver is definitely the colourway I'd have gone with out of the three :)

I will see how I get on with Alice, I have always wanted to try it, what made me get it is I notice when I am using my keyboard at home, I keep moving the keyboard. Where I put the keyboard on my desk, as I pull the tray out, the keyboard is much closer to my body, and lower down than on a normal desk. With my arms closer to my body, I find myself with my elbows really tucked in to type. If I can't get used to it, I can just go back to my Q1 or Q2.

And yes, I did not, and do not want to spend £100+ on keycaps. I also would prefer a genuine set so something like £50 is perfectly acceptable. I have some £20 Keychron PBT caps and I found them to be okay but not great, whereas the current set I am using from Novelkeys is much nicer but also was like £60.

p.s there were 2 sets of these Chemical keycaps left, now just 1.

While I have bought dupe caps previously, I have our purchased a few Gmk sets, despite the price I feel they add to the overall feel & sound of the keyboard.

Really like those chemical caps
