The Mrs. and I had something similar to this for a little while. Some random girl kept calling our house phone at about 00:30 random nights. When you answered it, she just kept crying down the phone repeating "Hello?... *sniff*, *sob*, Hello??"

Went on for a couple of weeks then just stopped. Mighty confusing.

Always worked for me, caller soon gets bored and rings off never to return,

The silent/abusive/plain odd callers just want attention and when there is none they cant stand the silence, kind of like a troll, if not fed will go some place else.

Surely that just putting your phone on silent at night would solve a lot of your problems?

Or my personal favorite when it comes to cold callers or marketers is to answer the phone and then just let it go until they hang up. Makes them waste money and they don't get to leave you a message, win-win.

Yeah, asked the usual questions: "Who is this?", "Are you OK?", "Is this xxxxx" (thought it might have been the wife's sister playing a joke as I used to sound-board them all the time), etc. Never got an answer. Just crying, and pained/distraught "Hello?" for about two minutes.

Pretty creepy. As I said though, it stopped just as abruptly as it started.
