Western Digital HD issue

Recently my friend bought a new western digital 500gb IDE hard drive just so he can store his data. Thing is, when it was installed windows only seems to boot to the windows xp loading screen and then just reboots again and goes into a loop of rebooting constantly when it boots to the loading screen.

Anyways i dissconnected the drive and windows boots fine which is funny since windows isnt even installed on the new drive. But ive also checked his BIOS and DOS seems to detect the hard drive in the BIOS, so i cant see it being a dodgy hard drive. Windows just seems to go into a reboot loop when the drive is connected though.

Personally i think its just windows being a pain as usual. Any idears of what this problem is guys? Any suggestions on how to fix this? if you know anything that would be great.

Thanks :)

This is definitely IDE not SATA? I've seen very similar symptoms with SATA300 drives on SATA150 only boards.

What board is this connected to? Any other IDE devices connected at the same time?

Yes it definatly an IDE Drive. Its connected into the secondary IDE port on his motherboard. He also has two DVD drives, one master and one slave on his primary IDE interface. Il have to ask him what make his board is though. Il sort that now.

Also didnt know that this was a common issue with SATA. Least were getting somewhere though.

Thanks for your reply. :)

I assume by your post he has the following plugged in:

Primary IDE: 2 x DVD Drives
Secondary IDE: 2 x Hard Disks

Check the jumpers at the back of the hard drives, make sure you have 1 set to master the other to slave.
The jumper position should be marked on the sticker on the back of the drive or etched into the plastic above the jumpers, This may mean you have to remove the drive from the machine to check.

Ive already checked the jumper configuration m8. He only has the one Drive on the secondary IDE, since the the rest of his hard drives are raided on SATA so its just the one drive that is on the secondary IDE. All cables are checked and connected correctly, the jumpers are on cable select as well.

Rpstewart ive also found out the make of his motherboard as well its the MSI K8N Platinum.

It can be found via this link.
