you plug an external storage source into these via the usb or network (NAS) or from your computer, and this device plays them on your tv.

You can plug in a usb wireless dongle for wireless transfers etc. I use a el cheapo 300mbs one and get 9MBs, which isn't bad.

Just about to click buy on two of the 1TB Live Hub things.

Are they worth it!?

EDIT:

God damn, too impatient. Ordered them anyways!

I'm getting one for myself in a week or so, after all of the reviews I have read the temptation is too much :D

:)

One for me and one for the Mrs' dad. Really looking forward to getting them. Will be sure to post my thoughts when I have mine set up!

You guys could have saved yourself some money thought and put my RAM in the same delivery! ;)

looking forward to hearing what you think of the system.

WD have some very exciting additional products due soon that will compliment the live hubs.

keep your eyes peeled :D

From what i've read, the "gigabit" ethernet port maxes out at 9-10MB/s which isn't quick enough to stream 25GB MKVs over the network. It apparently stutters like crazy

Will be a Dune HDTV-301 for me i'm afraid!

Thank you OCUK. Again, amazing level of service, this is why I buy all my computer related kit from you guys.

WD TV Live Hub turned up today and absolutely dying to go home and fire it up!

Thoughts and more pics posted later!

Initial thoughts;

Nice, solid packaging. Quality look and feel to Live Hub. Controller nice to the touch, not cheap at all as some reviews have stated. Contents includ the hub, controller, batteries, power cable and quick start guide.

Two flaws which let me down abit.

1) no connectivity cables, atall.
2) no user manual. (That said, the full manual can be viewed easily online.)

More detailed review to follow. Im playing with it at the moment!

:)

The WD TV Live Hub is a brilliant little media player which will test you to begin with but as long as you have the patience of a saint you will get there in the end. After unpacking I was pleased with the presentation of both the hub and control, thinking they would compliment my entertainment centre nicely. I was disappointed that for its premium, you get no connectivity cables of any kind. Luckily, I had spare network and HDMI leads to hand.

Setting up the hub was a simple task. The hub was instantly visible on my network and after a small firmware update, I could start filling it with films. This is the part you save your patience for. I have 400GB of films and with a network transfer rate of 9/10 MBps you can imagine this took a painfully long time, 4/5 hours to be exact. With the internal hard drive, I am left surprised WD did not allow for hub to PC transfer via USB 2.0. There is a feature which will allow you to sync an external hard drive via USB but this isn't much faster with a transfer rate of 13/15 MBps.

After leaving the hub all night to play some games, I returned once the transfer was complete. This is where all of the bad feeling just magically disappears and you get a warm fluffy, colourful feeling inside.

The menu system is smooth and responsive, my videos were instantly recognised. As long as the hub is connected to the internet, you can gather info for each of your movies which will give them the proper names, a small synopsis and the movies poster, a feature which really impressed me and left my catalogue looking very professional.

After selecting a film its playing within seconds. The picture quality is outstanding and movie play back is smooth as silk. I only had time to test a few minutes of film but am looking forward to giving it a good run in over the weekend.

There are a range of other funky features which I have yet to explore but after spending a slightly painful evening with the WD TV Live Hub and having a chance to reflect on my thoughts, I am more than satisfied with the purchase. I would recommend this product to anyone who is after a 1080p network media player.

9/10 from me.

pro's and con's to name a few;

Pro's.
Easy setup
Instantly discoverable over networks
Smooth and easy to use user interface
Smooth 1080p movie playback
The ability to display hardcoded subs with the feature to turn them on or off
Network ready meaning when you have a new film you can just dump it on there

Cons.
No cables included
No user manual
Slow transfer speeds

nice write up Damien :)

wasn't aware that it could do subs too.

I have heard great things about the interface. seems that you are echoing those sentiments.

Thanks.

Yes I was pleasantly surprised by the interface.

You are right, reviews reported good things about it but I didn't expect it to be as good as it is. There is a fair bit of customisation that can be done too, such as background music, wallpaper changes, different layouts for media files etc etc.

The main reason for purchase was to play my "ehem" .264 files. It does this flawlessly ;).

Nice little review there. Very surprised to hear they didn't include any cables tho!

Thanks.

It does state on the product listing that cables aren't included, so I knew this before hand. That said, many people will miss this part and be disappointed when it turns up.

I am more shocked that for the premium they haven't included a cable of any sort!

It's just one of those minor points though. A network and HDMI cable can be had for less than a tenner.

Thanks for the write up mate, and also pics of the hub.

Don't suppose you have any pics to hand of the GUI?

Tempted by one of these now the PS3 can play next to none of my films!

I assume you transferred the files over wireless at them speeds?
