We've noticed you're using an ad blocker...

I just stop using the site and change my browsing habits if they detect the ad blocker. One example being wired.com, which I haven't missed at all as it turned into a click bait site anyway.

If the whole entire advert/popup ecosystem wasn't so plagued with viruses/malware and generally shady practices then we wouldn't need to use things like adblocker. Admittedly it has got a lot better in recent years but it is what it is.

I don't like the whole "We deserve to get paid" attitude towards websites and videos these days.

Back in the day, you made videos and websites as a hobby, they cost you a little money, but that's what hobbies do. Now, though, everyone is screaming "If you don't support me I can't make content!"

Pfft. If you can't afford to create content, get a real job.

I've been running a website, ad-free, for years now out of my own pocket, as it is my hobby.

To be fair I imagine a lot of the reason we get scammier ads these days is due to adblockers. It used to be a few sites that ran bad ads (and the occasional bad adsense ads) but it's got a lot worse.

I presume since google doesnt allow the "please turn off adblock" messages sites have moved to less scrupulous ad networks which happily try and bypass adblockers.

Ones that annoy me more are the ones that bug you to share them on social media as soon as you load the page.

The ones that offer me a service (like forums I enjoy using, websites I download files from etc) I'll disable the adblock but everything else can get stuffed.

The reason we got scammier ads is because people got greedy.

Why have a static banner ad when you can have flashing ads that play video and sound that can serve you malware.

Then why just have one ad when you can have a site wrapper with banner, tower, square, inline, linked to keywords and have pop unders/overs when you click anything that also has buttons to share on every social network under the sun that people don't really use.

If they want to combat adblockers then reduce the amount of adverts, there should be a crowdsourced function in all adblocking software that allows the consensus to agree that a site doesn't have intrusive or excessive ads that puts the site on a whitelist that just updates everyones adblocker to allow ads on a site.

For the people who are ***** who want something for nothing can just disable the whitelist. For everyone else it gives sites a chance to start making decent money again.

Thats a good idea ^^.

Pcgamers mobile version is a **** show of this. Ads at the side and in the middle of content. It's pretty much broken on mobile.

I have no issue with ads as long as they're static banners. All these popunder/over/flash banners do my head in.

Adsense has an option to turn of all but static ads. Just a shame the video stuff pays higher. When the majority are blocking these days sites turn to scammy or higher paid ones to make up the loss. Shame as it just leads more to adblockers rather than solving the issue.

this, no idea why youtube people think they deserve all the video ad rev and all seem to have patreon accounts and make the occasional video saying disable your ad blockers or your STEALING from me. pshh. oh and then they complain that their lives are so hard and its so much work editing videos of themselves talking crap or playing games whatever. yeah well try working a real job and see how much free time you have! Then theres the army of attention seeking 'fans' (ridiculous concept in itself) will bend over backwards (and im sure forwards, given the opportunity) to defend and ridicule anyone who had an ad blocker etc. le sigh

phew, rant over.

See a potentially click bait link.
Click it just incase it's not BS.
Forced to watch the adblock advert...

Sorry but this "real job" dig at people who create content is just as bad as the people who say you are stealing their content.

It's not just "talking to a camera". They are being an entertainer/presenter who has to keep their videos fresh and interesting for hours and hours at a time. I would argue it takes longer than a normal 8 hour day to plan the content, capture the video while being entertaining, then editing and uploading the video, creating thumbnails and description, etc..

Just because they don't feel tired and aren't dirty and sweaty from doing a hard manual labour job doesn't mean it's "not a real job".

Agreed. They are also so humble about their patreon's too "oh I wasn't going to set one up, but my girlfriend insisted I just take a look so I thought oh ok, you don't have to give much but it would be a great help"

Then proceed to mention it every video and link to it under everything.

Tend to agree with this.

Not sure why anyone would think it's not a job. Videos don't just magic themselves into existence.
