Hi guys, so I've been looking around at 4K TVs. We watch movies and TV through Xbox one X, and standard sky subscription (for now) and games are played on the xbox one x too - so a 4k HDR display would be nice!!

Wish list:
  • 4K
  • HDR10 (10 bit panel)
  • Good blacks
  • Greater than 60Hz refresh
  • Budget was £500 but grew to £750 at a push as I got enticed by the MU7000
I had been looking at LG but was disappointed to see that their 4K panels in my price range were 8bit HDR and RGBW which affected certain viewing conditions. So I looked at Samsung, having had a great picture from one before...

Evolution of my research so far:
  • Samsung UE49MU6400 £530 - (1500 PQI) but then saw that the next set had much better picture quality and execution of the HDR
  • Samsung UE49MU7000 £750 - but 49" model is only 60Hz (1900 PQI with 700 cd/m2 brightness)
  • Samsung UE49MU8000 £999 - Premium 4k (2000 PQI, 1000 cd/m2) but now WAY too pricey...
So...looked at Sony Bravia -
  • Sony Bravia KD-49XE8005 £630 - oddly cheaper than the 43" version (????) within budget and seems to tick boxes (Motionflow XR 200Hz, HDR10 and not the 8+2FC that Samsung use) but cannot find brightness rating  . Also heard the IPS panel on the 80 series is not the best option for reproduction of blacks.
  • Sony Bravia KD-49XE9005 £1099 - Seen a lot of recommendations for the 90 series - seems to trump all with the VA panel, but as to be expected I am now looking hugely over budget. :(
So then got pointed towards Panasonic
  • 50EX750B £850 - Seems to be good (MVA panel, HDR10, 120Hz refresh) - but reviews are that the picture quality is good but doesn't have the "wow factor" of others and the black can be uneven with backlighting.

So yeah, I'm at a bit of a loss here - I don't know where to compromise now! Any resident experts help me out here?
Unfortunately the "if you can find anoth £xxx then this one would be perfect" argument will not work unless it comes down in price (infact it will probably only mean that I don't get one at all and keep saving/waiting for one at the right price in the future)

Yeah, its a nightmare isn't it, I currently have a UE48H6400 and am struggling to find something that really ticks all the boxes and won't make me regret swapping to it, like you it was all 8bit, RGBW, poor blacks, poor smart.

I looked at the Sony in JL, which appears to be the same as the 8004 elsewhere as well as almost buying an LG before realising it was RGBW.

I have personally decided to leave it another six months, but have seen Amazon and JL are doing the 50EX700B for £570 which may interest you - although reviews say pay the extra for the 750.

Same here Pepp i have the same TV and i still think its still a cracking TV and proberly Samsungs last best model that i have seen i was looking at changing. But i would only be changing it for a 49" and i don't think it be much of an upgrade for 4k at that size. Until i see a 49" that will give the wow factor. Proberly be ok with the H6400 for another 2 years at least. Lets face it the H6400 is only 3 half years old

I agree though about over budget with the Sony 90 series i was thinking about that one to but for that price your getting towards OLED but they start at 55" which i don't want to go for even though my stand could do 55" it would look stupid meaning my Dali Kubic one would go lower and look out of place and im not changing my TV stand at the moment that cost me £300 3 months ago

I'm looking at 50" tops otherwise I need to either move my wall mount higher - thats 6 x 10mm holes in the wall again as the TV is currently about an inch below the top of the front speakers, or put my front speakers (QA2020is) on their side, which would look stupid, as I just have no space between the speakers to put a bigger TV, and no space on the TV unit or in fact that whole wall area to move the speakers outwards.

The annoying thing is I only decorated in April and placed the mount, TV unit, speakers based on the TV I had which looks great, I just didn't think about what would happen if I decided to change the TV!

Got nothing to add except came here to ask the exact same question and so glad to see Pickers has actually done some thorough research. I have just nearly pulled the trigger on a couple of sets and backed out. KD49XE8004BU @ £549 or UE49MU6400 @£529. My budget was around £600 but was hoping not to go up to £850 which is all I can find the mentioned 50ex750 for. Would be interested in what you ended up getting, Pickers. Cheers.

Save for the Sony XE9005. It has direct lit LED panel which has showed good results in local dimming for HDR content wit great blacks. In addition arguably the best motion handling of all the current LCD/LED sets..

It should be a little cheaper in the January sales, so I would save and wait until then if you can, otherwise the next best opportunity is in the spring sales.

Glad to hear I'm in good company!! Looks like sitting on my hands for a while then! I'd love the xe9005 but don't want to have to pay more when cheaper ones will do - your vote of confidence in it gives greater weight to trying to get that one though!

I've not concerned myself with angles as we are always square on...

This makes for some intriguing reading in favour of the Panasonic (excusing the fact its the daily star...)

I my self was looking at 49" inch screens as OLED start from 55"

I was also looking at around £750 too.

I've been much settled on the Sony Bravia KD-49XE9005 personally, Yes it way more than i was wanting to spend but it has one key feature which i think will help with its longevity over all others in the usb £1000 market as I want the TV to last without me wanting to upgrade again for 6 years or more (Im currently on a 2011 IPS Panasonic 43.

That feature is the direct LED backllight and no tthe the Edge LED backlight for the already mentioned local dimming.

In the black Friday deals it did go down to £999 and I bet it will again in the boxing day/nww year sales. Especially as the 55" version is only £100 more atm.

Up-until then I was looking at the 50EX750B, I've seen both screens side by side and they both look fantastic but the Sony in this case has the edge for sure.

So yer Im waiting for it to drop down to £999 again at RS if not lower in the sales , but I have a £100+ of refunds from RS to come which will help from the extended warranty I never used 6 years ago.

Not all LG are ips rgbw panels. I have one which is va and rgb.

Unsure if mine is 10 bit though, it's a 635v

If it's the UJ635V (which seems to be the only 635v google finds) then unfortunately yes it is an RGBW Panel and its 8-Bit + FRC. But then that also shows as an IPS screen as well.

I just bought the curved 49" MU6500 a week or two ago. To my eye, it's amazing. Not much love for curved screens on the market generally, I understand, but we rather liked it

Replaces a sub-30" Panasonic crt, though, so anything is a bit of a step up :D
