Been looking at the Jeep Cherokee's and Isuzu Bighorns, but what would you advise for sub £3k? Will be used for carrying tools..supplies from shops etc. We want it to be fairly big but not monstrous.

We've had a look at the Hilux's but we're not too sure.

Any other ideas?

Sorry for re-post, but this is for a 4x4 instead of the Ute idea now.

If you want to carry tools around, why not buy a van like most workmen?
Just remember, paint it white and it'll be the fastest thing on the road.

If you fancy carrying the odd person too, then an MPV would be much more space efficient.

4X4's are useless for space. If you do insist on getting one make sure it has a tow bar because you'll be needing a trailor once you realise it's not as big as you first thought. Something like an estate or van would be much better.
