What a complete muppet

Reminds me of Jeremy Clarkson's motorworld program.

He left a £50 note on the dash of convertable TVR with the roof down. Luckily he was parked in Monte Carlo and it was there 3 hours later when he came back.

Oddly he didn't try the same thing in Cuba.
 
Good Lord, and I thought living in LA made ME paranoid!!! Where do you folks live?!?!?!?!

My Toyota has been sitting out front with the key sitting in the center console (just a tub, no lid) for 3 months now. I don't even know if the door locks work on the Toyota or the truck as I've never used them.

Back in January we had a little cold snap where it went down to 43 below and people were having trouble starting thier cars on break at work. I went out to give the Yoda a try and it barely started. So I left it running. FOR SIX HOURS UNATTENDED!!! I couldn't see the car, I couldn't hear the car. I wasn't the only one. There were at least 5 other cars left running as well. Some on auto-starts, some (like mine) with the key in the ignition and the doors unlocked.

The worst any of us were worried about was that one guy needed to stop for petrol on his way home and was worried about running out leaving it idling.....

I couldn't imagine living in the absolute FEAR that you folks do. I've got enough stress in my life without worrying if some obnoxious **** is going to steal my car. Guess that's one good thing about living in a concealed weapons capable state. Criminals determine rather quickly that a car isn't worth taking a bullet over.
 
Oh, and I guess another thing that helps keep crime down in this area is all the Indian reservations. As a coworker at the bus plant said one day - "I live on the res. There's places out there I could hide a body that NOBODY would ever find it!!"

I left the 205 GTI unlocked outside my house for 2 years. Same with a BMW 320, the Sierra.... in fact pretty much all of my cars.
 
I once went and recovered one of our vans that had been stolen full of parcels, from wisbech.

The guys had managed to get away with it because the driver had taken the keys out of the ignition and left them on the drivers seat while he went out delivering.
Apperently he did it every drop and it never occured to him that the van might get stolen.
 
Thinking about it, I have left my car keys in my ignition overnight many a time. I guess it depends on the area you live. I went to France for a long weekend and left the door open (by accident). Everything was still there when I got back.

Probably should be more careful, but when you have lived in a safe area you tend to take it for granted.

Must say that I am geniunely surprised by the attitude of some people on this thread.

Whilst I would never do something like that there are still some people who have basic faith in humanity. I'm going to give the guy a round of applause for still believing that people are not thiefing ***** gets :)

No, a mistake would have been leaving the car unlocked.

Not leaving the car unlocked, leaving the keys to the (fast) car in the ignition, and leaving a nice wad of cash on the seat.

That is beyond a mistake, that is simply retarded.

All these people saying "i left my car open overnight" why, why bother doing that? It takes what, 20 seconds MAXIMUM to take your keys and lock the car, is it really worth the increased risk of NOT locking the car?

FYI, I live in a relatively crime free and quiet area, and have on occasion (ie once or twice) forgotten to lock the car and it has been ok, but I certainly wouldn't make a habit of not locking the car.
 
Got to admit, I am uber careful with the LCR. TBH I always have a quick look around when getting in\out espicially in dodgy late-night carparks etc but that's just because I live in a crime-infested rathole.

Can imagine getting into village life and being more relaxed about it. Put youself in his shoes, if you lived in a nice village, didn't think much crime was about it would undoubtly affect your level of caution.

Granted, the cash thing is inexcusible.

I'm in his shoes all the time, if I go to the newsagents I pop down to my local Co-op village store, which, surprisingly is in a small quiet, full of >£1mil houses village. People's cars have still had things taken from their expensive cars (on the carpark of the co-op).

The problem is, the scum can go anywhere, even quiet villages. And seeing as it takes seconds to lock the car, why not just lock it?

Yea man, I can really see where you are comming from. Coz I'd much rather worry about some random crazy pulling a gun on me than having my car nicked :confused:

Dont those cars have remote central locking? If he was in a hurry, takes nothing to take keys with you and press as you're running to the shops.
 
I can't remember a time when I've not locked my car, its just habit really. Just like putting on a seatbelt when I get in.

I think more than anything leaving that sort of cash on the seat is just stupid.

His mistake will have cost him a lot of money though...
