Got my PS3 last friday, forgot to order a HDMI cable though so stucj in the composite liead and away i went, quite impressed with it all.

HDMI I ordered on friday arrived today, cheap 5.99 jobby from an online retailer and WOW! What a difference, MotorStorm looks amazing!

its literally a world apart, so glad i bought my 32" lcd at xmas now, with 576i its only slightly better looking than a PS3, with the HDMi it gives my X1800XT PE a good run for its money, very little jaggies and super smooth!

I'd be interested if you could compare component to HDMI. A lot of xbox fangirls whine when I say I'd like an HDMI connection on the 360 but I know there's plenty of room for improvement on the component output and would liek to see if there is as much of a differenc eon the PS3 as there are in DVD players.

well i got my hdmi cable with my ps3 plus 3 games and a bluray disc for £525 i think it was, i think graphics are on par with xbox 360 on my hdtv but its only a 720P screen will really need to save up and buy that sammy 46 incher 1080P that costs £1800 currently, so looks like ill be saving until christmas with my current credit cards all maxed out and no money in the bank

We set up a 360 and PS3 at my brothers, with HD-DVD and BR films, and RR6/RR7 on the two consoles.. we used a Pioneer 507XA Plasma, and a Sharp 52XD1E and the sharp 46XD1E (Both 1080p LCDs)

HDMI does make a difference, of course it is crisper up close, not so much from normal distances, the keen eyed will see it though, but only a fool would say it doesn't make a difference.. Although when playing games, never did we think the 360 was soft or lacked colour etc..

Swapping the PS3 to component, and to be honest, it did look a bit soft.. softer then component on the 360.. edge effects on text where just about visible.. I suspect that Sony, naturally, would not have ploughed money into the Analogue side of things when the digital connection is present..

It may also depending on your TV, if it's analogue component in is poor, then it's going to make the difference much more pronounced..

Those pictures above are far worse then we've seen.. are you sure they are at the same 'res'.. or is your TV very bad with component it?

its a two month old 32" LCD, component cable fed into my dvd recorder first so i suppose you would loose a little more than normal as it is going through two composite cables.

Paid £59.99 for my HDMI cable.

...and yes, the quality is superb when using HDMI ;)

Does the cost of the HDMI lead make much difference to the output ? Just ive seen prices range from £5 to £70 and wonder if there was no difference why pay more that say £5-10 on a lead if the quality is the same?

i once paid £80 for a scart lead only to be told by a tv engineer it would have made about 2% difference to the picture and not noticeable by anyone in real terms

tbh 1080p only makes a difference at 42 inch + for people like me who have no room for huge 1080p tvs, 32 inch HDTVS in 720p are fine lol.

I heard the same about HDMI, never sure, wondered if anyone had a cheapo one and a expensive one to judge the quality.

A DVD recorder with component input.. what make/model is that.. I actually could do with that for recording SKY+ stuff to DVD to free up my HDD>..

Are you sure it's 'component' i.e. 3 leads (Red/Green/Blue sockets) just for video?? and not composite (single yellow socket for video).. not trying to be funny, just I can't quite believe my eyes, it's that much of a difference...

I believe it does.

Improved screening, better quality metals.. they all add up to an overall improvement if you were to use cheaper components. It's common sense :)

I work as a sound, lighting and AV engineer and I believe it does.

I know it makes sense but is it actually worth paying 4 or 5x as much for an expensive HDMI lead? Does it make THAT much difference i dont mind paying £60 for a lead if its actually a big improvement in picture quality than say a £15 one. Also does the sound quality through HDMI improve with a better lead? Im asking as i need a new sound system and wondered how best to output the sound HDMI or optical?
