What A Difference HDMI Makes!

Has anyone seen the difference between HDMI and Component? I only have component, DVI and VGA inputs and not really sure I can be bothered shelling out the extra for HDMI>DVI (My TV does have HDCP).

I've also heard that Blu-Ray will only do 480p over component?

So it's safe to say that while there are advantages to higher quality HDMI cables, if you get a picture with no obvious defects with a cheap one, you won't get any better quality with a high quality one. In terms of picture anyway. Might not be so obvious with the sound.

That's basically it. Anyone who says they 'upgraded' their HDMI cable and got richer colours are deluded or insane. The same with people who reckon changing their digital audio cable brought out sounds they'd never heard before.

Cant see any difference between a £20 HDMI cable and a £9 one.
(My Virgin V+ has the £10 one so it was easy to swap around with the PS3 to test)

Also, 360 HD Composite looks just as good (display wise) as the PS3 HDMI output.

There were reports that if you have an older supposedly HD ready CRT that only does 1080i and not 720p the PS3 would downscale to 480i but I think this was corrected in a firmware upgrade.

In other words, if you have a TV that does 720p it will run at 720p

The problem is still there, the problem was older HDTV's that only took 1080i as their HD resolution..

If a game was a 720p game (As most are), due to the scalers 'issues' they could not be scaled to 1080 (i/p)... and thus could only then output at 480i/p

Now that a software work around has been given to developers new games have the ability to scale to 1080 from 720 if they want to..

Ah ok, as I underand this only affects a small number of older HD televivion sets like CRT HD screens, right?

Fortunately for me personally it isn't an issue as I will get a 1080p Sony LCD.
