What a rubbish World Cup so far

It’s boring so far but it’s only the beginning and the play will improve. I’m afraid that the days of free flowing football tournaments are long gone as there is too much at stake. I can live with that and there will be some very exciting games.

People have to remember that this is not a football exhibition showcase. It’s a competition that professional teams have come to win and they will not all take risks to please you watching on TV.

The big problem is the atmosphere, it’s just not there, you don’t hear the crowd, it looks lifeless and all you get is just that bloody awful noise. It’s something we are just going to have to live with because of FIFA political correctness not wanting to ban the Vuvuzela. It may be the sound of SA football but it most certainly isn’t the sound of world football.

Agree, you lose a lot of the emotional flow and ebb of the game with this. First half of Brazil game was just unbearable. It was a good idea of the BBC to put radio 5 commentary available as alternative audio, the Vuvuzela was less prominent.

I said this in another thread but as I don't watch football as it's all terrible and full of Ronaldo's who should have gone to acting school, I don't see many games, so for me the world cup has been awesome, but as most of you have seen thousands of games I can understand why it's boring. I'm enjoying it.

yea the vuzuvelas are rubbish mind. hopefully will calm down a bit in the later stages when 'real' fans are showing up to pay big money to see their teams

I've enjoyed the World Cup so far.

A few good games and performances to keep me happy.

I expect teams will start to try and go for it more with the next round of fixtures.

I don't think any of the teams are "bad" they're all here on merit.

The English media are lazy and don't put enough effort in to other sides, we often underestimate them and have an over exaggerated sense of how good we are.

International football is by and large rubbish, most peoples memorys are of just the last few games which are often hugely higher quality than the group stages between any teams, yet even the "great" games are below par to top champs league and great league games.

End of this tournement there will be one standout truly brilliant game , maybe an epic final and in 4 years people will be talking about the single epic game and have forgotten most of everything else.

By and large the football has been abysmal and atmosphere even worse. I do think the noise and lack of proper atmosphere is making the football even worse than usual for this stage, but not much.

Italy and Brazil were pretty awful to watch in the last world cup till the the later stages, Italy barely looked good at any stage.

I've never gotten excited about international football, its a nation, big whoop, the football is worse.

Lets take the england team, the squad that played the first game had never played together before and had a couple weeks light training.

AT club level they train 5 times a week and play upwards of 50 games a year including friendlies, the best teams play another 10-20 in europe and domestic cups, is it any wonder thats where you see the best football?

To be fair its been a pretty dire WC especially for the bigger teams ie Portugal, Cameroon, Italy and to an extent even Brazil earlier tonight. Some pretty dire and boring games...only reason why ive been watching the games other than Brazil is due to an accumilator i had going but thanks to yesterday and todays results going against me...its been pretty dire.

Had to watch the Brazil game as i love the way they play their football...but so far the Germans are the ones to beat at the moment...hopefully Spain will put a few past the Swiss. But really im hoping that the second round of group games gets a bit more exciting or else this is going to be officially the worst WC ive ever seen.

I agree with that you are saying but the apart from the first goal everything has been crap and Africa will never see a world cup again!

The Germany-Australia match was the only one worth watching so far in my opinion. The lack of goals is a bummer but the worse thing is the actual football. Its shocking.

They can go shove their vuvuzela pieces of crap too.

Most group stages of the world cup are crap, especially when compared to the Euro's. It's also the first competitive game that these players have had in ~5 weeks and the first time they played a competitive game as a team in 7-8 months.

The Euro's is marginally better purely because it has worse teams in. Holland were great in the group stages, then they faced Spain and were a completely different side.

Messi played great(bar his finishing) yet thats not enough, one man playing well doesn't drag a team to winning a cup.

Spain could potentially liven up the competition a bit, but people should remember that the Swiss didn't concede a goal in their last world cup, they went out on penalties to the Ukraine without having conceded a goal in normal time.

Senderos is actually decent in a team he plays in regularly and its fairly impressive how well the Swiss defended. They are well organised but will seemingly be missing Behrami who was HUGE for them in the Euro's.

To be honest without the same players or form, I can't see Spain not thrashing them.

Might be a bit premature, but assuming Spain are playing as they have for 3 years, its looking like a Germany vs Spain semi final, better hope Brazil pick up towards the end of the competition, or the argies, for a decent final.

Halftime at the Spain game, I think I'm starting to get used to the damn horns. However whether that's because there are significantly fewer of them at this match I don't know. I respected the fact that it may have been part of African football or whatever so I didn't mind it. However hearing (unsurprisingly) that it's not quite like that is annoying.

The commentators are really mirroring however how we're feeling about the games and they're annoying us. Especially Mick McCarthy. :/

I don't think the altitude is a problem. It's not that high, plus there was a rugby and cricket world cup in South Africa where this wasn't an issue. However the change in physiology could be breaking what is breaking the straw on the camel's back if that makes any sense, the WC is at the end of the season where a good proportion of players have played 45 games or more and fatigue could be setting in.

Aye, took the words out of my mouth.

Also don't forget when domestic teams do something International sides follow. The switch to more defensive 451s is no exception, and now teams are full of players with relatively few games together.

This is nothing new - the early games in the World Cup *are* boring and they generally do disappoint. This is one of the first world cups where every game has been available to so many people - when previously only the pick of the group games would be shown.
