What a rubbish World Cup so far

I agree with the OP and just about all my friends have said the exact same things as the op. The trouble is we are blessed with champions league football year in year out, with teams that would rip apart just about every single international team thats playing today.

Screw the wolrd cup, just have a club world cup every 4 years ;)

really? *cough* did you see the WC in 86' ?

I'd be willing to bet that if that scenario were to be re done in the 2010 WC it wouldn't happen. Why?

Bloody vuvuzelas.

Listen to the roar of the crowd when Maraodna gets the ball. If that happens today all you'd hear is the same old ****ing drone. How's that meant to lift your spirits?

Bah.

The ball is a bit dodgy, the pitches are bone dry and slow (they refuse to water them) and the western teams are not coping with the altitude.

I hate to agree because I was really looking forward to the World Cup but it has been terrible so far. The only genuinely good performance so far was by Germany, with Brazil looking decent in the second half tonight. I just hope Spain are brilliant tomorrow and make things a bit more interesting. Lets hope that the second round of games are better now that teams aren't so afraid of losing.

If it continues like this it will go down as one of the most boring World Cups of all time!

LOL Spain lost!!:D Another reason for this world cup being lackluster

It will kick off around Monday when things start to get serious!!
(I know the WC is serious in itself, but these are win or your out type of games!)

Agree with the op, the wc has been lacklustre to date, but it Is earlly days.

I enjoyed the Uruguay vs south Africa match - did anyone notice the vuvuz were much quieter? I don't know if the officials restricted them or if the BBC have filtered them or adjusted the audio balance on their commentary - guessing the latter.

I hope this WC isnt classed as a success its been a bit of a farce!

The damn horns has split people
The football hasnt been all that great
Stadiums no where near full in some games, for a WC this is so poor.
Stewards striking as they haven't been paid
SA on the verge of going out already, imagine how empty the stadiums will end up then

The only good things going for it so far is that the officals have actually been pretty good on the whole!

I think its been pretty good. The fact we haven't see many goals shows just how good both sides are.

To be honest, if games were goal fests.. it would also seem dull.

like...

Just no competition.

Lets face it the World Cup should never have gone to Africa but the hand wringers seemed to think it was a wonderful idea

How on earth can they justfy building £400m stadia while places like Soweto exist ?

The vuvuzelas essentially killed any atmosphere in the grounds and made viewing painful and irritating for millions of people. Now that SA are all but out I expect the grounds to be even emptier. Pathetic commentry on both channels and that bloody droning din has got to such a point where the crowd noise is turned down to near nothing meaning lifeless matches.

On the pitch the football has been pretty woeful probably due to fear more than anything so I would expect the quality to improve as the knockout stages get closer.

Why mess about with the ball, there are plenty of footballs why use the World Cup to test a new one ?

Some half decent games coming up but I'm afraid the World Cup isn't a patch on the Champions League.

Nevertheless I'll still be watching avidly in the hope that things get better ;)

its not been a terrible event

but i mean we have seen furthering of the increase of skill of the lower teams and the capitulation of the so called better teams.

i mean seriously, how terrible did brazil strikers appear (okay nilmar looked sharp-ish, but Luis Fab was terrible. same for italy, same for france.

10 years ago if brazil played north korea it would not have ended 2-1 i am confident.

I'm glad South Africa got beaten, it might reduce the sound of those crappy horns when they get knocked out, i seriously think it's putting off some of the teams because they can't hear their fans like they usually can when they play football elsewhere.

People shouldn't judge a tournament by the opening games as there is a different kind of pressure on the players than in any other match they have ever played.
Saying that though the horns kill the atmosphere which just about ruins it for non football people.
I'm hanging in there hoping for things to pick up play wise & for the sound engineers to get the filtering right.

Look on the bright side.

I usually don’t follow football much, but the wife and I make a point of trying to watch every game in the world cup.
To say those vuvu horns have made it horrid is an understatement.
But now that the RSA are on their way out it may lessen the stupid noise from those damm things .Let’s be honest if you pay to watch a match and then blow on one of those zela’s for the whole 90 mins you must be a window licker first class.:p
I hope that the South African’s get totally annihilated next game, and this is from someone who usually supports the host nation - thats how much those bloody horns pee me off.

Mark Lawrenson's commentary is hilarious. Says nothing almost all game except the odd sarcastic comment and then the awesome "he could run the game wearing slippers" comment about Forlan.

Re. the empty stadiums - is it anything to do with the fact that football in S. Africa is a blacks sport and by and large, the blacks are poorer? This is not a racist comment, just an observation from various comments I've heard on the radio. Therefore crowds will always be lower in a country where the main fans are often too poor to buy tickets.

Agree it's been a shoddy world cup so far.

i've enjoyed it.

empty seats - recession/ticket cost, safety /security, transport logistics (it's not the easiest county to travel around)

Hes a grade A idiot really...i dont mind Mick McCarthy as he sometimes talks sense but Lawrenson is just an idiot really.

Im beginning to think that after all the games so far...the ball is causing all sorts of problems...crosses are going wild along with free kicks...so far Maicon and Forlans goals have been the best of the bunch...disappointing that there havent been more stunning goals.

agree with all of that apart from the champions league part,I just hope as good as the champs league is , doesn't get to over shadow the worlds biggest tournament.

The FA cup used to be the thing everyone aimed for , along side the league (this is our bread and butter a famous phrase :p)

Now the champs league is the most sought after :(

Do they not always use a "new" football at World Cups / Euro's?

This ball has been available for 6 months previous to this World Cup. They've had chance to use it.

The "ball" excuse doesn't wash, it's poor ability and just bad passes that send the ball flying out of play/miss placed passes.
