Hi, been through the forums for a quick search on these cars but couldn''t find any threads...

I have been checking out the fiesta st recently and it seems like a great little machine - i would be buying 2nd hand and it would to replace my trusty wee red 1.25 Zetec model. Would people recommend the ST as a good step up? Have started working full time now after finishing uni so being able to get a more decent car would be nice.

Any recommendations or other suggestions? I had originally thought about going diesel but id be doing an absolute max of 20k per year and not sure that this merits buying a diesel. Also they seem so expensive to buy also and I would like a more fun/nippy wee machine instead.

Comments welcome!

20k a year is about where people say it's economical to buy a diesel, but it varies from car to car

STs are nice little cars for what they are.

maybe its derv territory though, could get a nice lil' derv that is just as quick easily after a couple little mods :p

i think if your absolute max mileage will be 20k if you can afford to buy one of these in the first place then you should be able to afford the fuel bills.

As has been mentioned, if you are considering a Fiesta ST you'd also be best to have a test drive of a Clio 182 and possibly a Civic Type R. All 3 can be had for around the same money. You should be able to pick up an Fiesta ST, a Clio 182 of similar age (or just slightly older), or a Civic 3 or 4 years older for around £8K. The Clio and Civic will cost a fair bit more to insure though.

i personally found the civic to be much more expensive than the 182 to insure. clio 182 and focus st170 were both £957 to insure at 21, 1 yrs ncb, thats with greenlight...they wouldnt touch anyone under 25 on a civic type r

Including build quality? The ST Fez is great.

Are you saying you'd take a Fiesta ST over a Clio 182 ? Build quality in the Fiesta ST is a little better i'd agree but it certainly wouldn't make me choose one over the 182 :) A freind has an ST and while i think its a great little car i certainly wouldn't swap it for my 182.

Yep, I think they are great cars white with a blue stripe :)

cheers for the responses guys - insurance will probably still be an issue so if i can insure an st before the civic or the 182 then it is another plus point. Also i never was a big fan of the french stuff so it would take a lot of persuading to get a renault! I think i was just thinking ST because i already have a fiesta and love it. For the 1.2 category it is easily the quickest out there - great engine the zetec. Most of the driving will be just for personal miles at weekends, occasional 300 mile round trips up and down to the south and whatever business miles i need to do to and from work - can work from home a lot so this will vary. I think i probably would be verging on diesel territory as mentioned, however, i think the higher cost of a diesel car would make it a less viable option here. The ST definitely reviews pretty well so will keep a look out and see what comes up. Appreciate all the feedback.

what about the Zetec S. instead? almost as fast, and has a diesel version too?

its a option...

im looking a Fiesta ST myself, my Car (2003 Mk6 1.25lx fiesta) PX and £3500 for the ST from some guy in kent... its almost a done deal but im getting 2nd thoughts now for some strange reason!! :(

sounds like a good deal to me - i really love my wee 1.25 zetec (2000 model) but to get it to move u have to constantly drive it pretty hard so the same car with more power would be nice - i think the ST is definitely the answer!

I love my Fez ST. :D

^ sorry, any excuse to post a picture. lol.

IMO it's better than the Clio in a few areas (obviously not power) but you get a bigger car so slightly more room inside, bigger boot as well which is always handy and then the build quality on top. Not knocking the 182, it's a cracking car and each have their pro's and con's. Some may find the driving position in the Clio not to their liking, or the ST just isn't quick enough.... etc.

Take one for a test drive... I'm sure you'll love it! :D
