What about this car?

For a first car the fiesta is fine but for the budget you have you could get something with a little more ooomph without going crazy on the insurance. If you are wanting the fiesta I would spend spend no more than £2750 ish on a MK5 or take a look at the MK5 Zetec-S 1.6

I currently own a 2001 1.25 Fiesta freestyle which I have had for the past year and I've put 11k on it (36k on the clock now) I bought it for £2700 and it is worth the same a year on.

It is cheap to run, ~280 miles on £30 mix of motorway/town/B roads driving like I stole it. It's fairly nippy around town sits happily at 80mph but is by no means fast. Insurance is fine £680 fully comp 0 no claims bonus. Nothing has went wrong with the car so far and my last service cost £180 from a ford garage.

If I was you I'd either look for a 2001/2002 Zetec-S fiesta 1.6 for £3.5-£4k or look at the focus

how about a Mazda 121 1.25 Zetec, cheaper to buy, cheaper to insure, usually have more toys for the money and as they look the same its equally as ugly ;)

Fiesta over focus if you want a small car, very easy to park, very cheap to run and insure.

Focus over fiesta for space, performance (1.6 ***), low running costs, low insurance, very easy to park...oh wait.

To be honnest the focus is a much better car for similar money.

For the money which focus should I be aiming to look for the pre-facelifter 1999-02 or 02-04 facelift?

Well i would go for a pre-facelift one if it means you can get one in better condition. Also the prefacelift looks much better once you detango it.

If you can squeeze it get a facelifted model due to the spec being slightly upgraded. Ideally you should be looking for a 1.6 Zetec or LX, these are about grp5e or grp6 to insure, comfy, fantastic to drive and pretty economical. Cambelt changes are at 100,000 miles, rear bearings tend to go at around 70,000 miles, other than that it's just the normal consumables you need to worry about.
(If you can find one with the Climate Pack do, as it will give you the heated wndscreen etc)

I've gotta admit the facelift focus looks better than the prevous, also the 60/40 rear seats are a plus.

Mine has 60/40 seats also and its a pre facelift.

Oh yes really get yourself the Zetec with climate pack.

I drive a MK 5 Fiesta and im saying with your budget id go for a Focus, id be more tempted to go for an older but higher kitted 2ltr model though.

Problem is insurance for a 17 year old though.

If you would like a bit of perspective here, If you didnt live miles away you could have my focus 1.6 limited edition for that money. 02 reg full leather, air con, heted front screen, heated seats 40000 miles Proper koni adjustable suspension (and stock) 17" lenso KR5 wheels (and stock) and a magnex cat back exhaust (and stock).
Its just over 100bhp and ins group 5 I think.
Or you could have a fiesta with seats and a steering wheel. :D
