17. Other than finances I don't understand the reasons behind waiting any longer than that. If its unaffordable fair enough but if it isn't it confuses me why some people wait so long before bothering.

Some people just have no need.

I didn't learn until I was 19 because my commutes at the time wouldn't have required a car. That and I wanted to spend my money on other things.

Started learning at 17, then took a break from it when I went to Uni, and finally passed at 23.

I wish i'd got it all done at 17 though, even if you don't get a car it's more "experience" to put in at insurance time.

17. Spent my first six months wages solely on motoring, including lessons, the theory and practical test, a 17 year old Nissan and insurance. The most expensive part? The insurance. Three times the cost of the motor.

Passed when I was 26, first time for what its worth. I had no need of a car and then when I went to Uni I couldn't afford one. At the first point of needing a car, I passed my test and bought a car.

Doing it any sooner would have been a waste of time and cash. Not for one day do I regret leaving it so late.

Passed at 22, couldn't afford to drive before uni, was terrified of lessons at uni (a few hours a week trying to drive round Belfast was a shouty northern irish man really didn't appeal) so waited till I was home comfortably.

Did a test and drive thing at Brands Hatch when I was about 12 and some Mini racing when I was about 16. Started learning properly when I was 18 and passed just before I was 19. I didn't really need a car until I moved out of home, hence not learning at 17.

Grasped the basics of clutch control, gear changes etc when I was 14/15, mum used to take me to a friends farm track and we used to drive all around there!

Proper lessons started at 17. Took about 3 months before I passed my test.

My Dad took me out on some quiet roads just before my 17th Birthday, and I started lessons proper about two weeks after my birthday (did them after school and my birthday was always in the Easter holidays). Passed about 4 months later (first time).

17. When nova's, metro's, fiesta's, escorts and astra's were all the rage. Jap imports were just starting to be shown on the covers of max power back then :D

13 across the desert road in an old pontiac between abu dhabi and dubai was fun an old jim rockford firebird dad had when we were kids but used to take and even older yamaha trail bike out across the dunes when i was 11 or 12 i think

think i passed my bike and car test in the same week bk in the uk after 3 proper lessons cost about £2 odd an hour in those days so basically 6 quid to pass me test.

Living on a farm I was driving on my own by the age of 10 (more like 7 but I wasn't strong enough to press the clutch down on my own then :o)

I was building petrol Go karts by 13 and driving cars around about the same time (round the farm)
Had my provisional all sorted for my 17th Birthday and was out on the road the same day.
About a month later I had an official driving lesson where he said "I'll put you in for your test, but I want to see you using your mirrors more. :o)
2nd lesson.. "Yea much better on the mirrors, Test was booked for April 91"
Passed first time.

Don't have a licence at the ripe old age of 44.

I can drive quite well and had a few lessons in the past, been insured on past partners cars an took it in turns to drive.

17. I wasn't hugely fussed at the time but my parents decided it would be a good thing. As soon as I got into it I was hooked, and glad I did!

Incidentally I had a rather strange dream last night that I was learning to drive in my Mondeo, driving around a field with my old driving instructor
