Hi all,

No doubt this has come up many times but im looking for a good all round security software (i.e anti virus, firewall) to go on my new lappie, Don't really want something that uses up loads of resources but do want something that is good.

Any recommendations?

I have seen this Kaspersky software popping up all over the place, Is it really that good? it seemed to suddenly hit the market?

Nod 32 anti virus and Windows Firewall does the job for me.
Eset also do Smart Security with is a complete package but it is more expensive.

There is a good roundup of these suite products in PC Pro this month and Avira Premium suite came out on top. It didn't excel in any single area but managed to place very highly in almost all tests.

I must confess I hadnt heard of it before but I'm tempted to have a look now.

I own licences to KIS 2009, NOD32 and Avira Premium. I generally stick with Avira. I just wanted to point out that although what you say is true, it could be misleading for someone who hasn't read that article.

PCP's roundup said it didn't WIN in every area, but it consistently scored high. Not coming 1st at everything != not excelling. In fact, Avira beat all of the big names (including NOD32 and Kaspersky) in malware detection, web threat detection etc. I just thought that was a distinction worth making ;)

I personally stopped using NOD32. It let a trojan through on my own PC, and I've been called to fix PCs for no less than three others who were running fully updated v3 NOD32 set to maximum detection (a la Blackspear's settings), which were also inundated with malware. IMHO NOD32 is slipping.

I do still like KIS, and it has great malware detection, but it's nowhere near the likes of Avira for web threat detection so it's a no brainer under most circumstances. Just my 0.02 :D

I had to fix my sisters PC yesterday and she too had a fully upto date eset smart security v3 but some how had a couple of viruses (not FP's) and malware.

I too think eset are slipping slightly and I am not one to go swapping around antivirus' just becuase it missed one or two viri but after installing Avira Premium I think I am going to start installing it on every machine I own. The interface is not the best, but the detection and its very low foootprint are impressive, it certaintly found a number of threats on my sister's computer.

I think eset are concentrating on the v4 which is currently in beta and seem to be neglecting v3 of their products.

Avira AV in conjunction with Comodo firewall [both freeware] is as good as any payware.

Just a thought: Why the hell isn't there a security software related sticky?

Kaspersky Internet Security 3 User license, a bargain at £15! You can use it on 3 computers for one year. It's only so cheap because it's OEM, all you get is a cardboard sleeve and the installation disc with the key on. I've been using Kaspersky for a couple of years and cannot fault it. Low resource use and excellent detection rates. They update the virus definitions practically every hour :D. NOD32 is also highly recommended on these forums but I haven't used it myself personally.

on kaspersky could you post amount of system processes & memory usage i love avast but, hate how it runs 6 just for AV

i just put avira on my main with win7 and its made games unplayable

perhaps there is a setting though for it that I'm not aware of?

Does anyone know if the GUARD setting slows down apps/games?

With the family computer downstairs (Vista HP, Celeron 1.8Ghz, 2GB Ram)
1.4mb when idle in the background
5mb when on screen
5.8mb when scanning in the background with 7% CPU usage.

I'm guessing it could be a compatibility issue with Win7 as Avira has one of the fastest scanning engines there is.

What Ratbag said. I had to uninstall Avira AntiVir Premium on my 7 box because the web guard was killing the internet intermittently and randomly. KIS2009 has no such issues, but then my mate reports that the FREE edition of Avira AntiVir has no issues either. Probably because the free edition doesn't have a web guard?

Oh the ironing :D
