Wife has told me she'd like an ipod nano for her xmas pressy. Being a geek i look up the spec and i'm utterly confused why anybody buys these things.

MP3 player, radio, shoddy camera, not brilliant sound quality form the oem headphones, compared to her mobile phone (3 month old noika 6700c) which does all of that, has a better camera AND makes calls.

Is there some other element that i'm not understanding? I know i'm not up to date with what is shiney in the world of technology, but this seems to be a matter of paying more for less.:confused:

I've tried explaining to her that she's already got all these functions on her phone but she tells me she can use it at work (she drives for a living, so she'd use the ipod instead of the bluetooth streaming HU she's got  )

Basically, huh?

iPods are pretty. Lacking features, but pretty.
The hardware looks and feels nice, but that's about it.

The earphones that come with ipod's are actually pretty good quality to be honest.

As for comparison to the phone. What sort of memory does the phone have ? Could that maybe be a factor ?

Also personally I find itunes far more user friendly with regards to uploading music to the ipod than I do with nokia type applications.

On a side note, I thought driving with earphones in your ear is against the law ? I could be completely wrong here mind (either way I shall don the flame coat now)

Guess it's the ease of use and integration with iTunes bloat that has kept it so strong through the years. Even though your average iPod has been outclassed for years in terms of features.

I've bought 3x new iPod Nano's for my teenybopper cousins this year because getting them used to a drag and drop player would just be a nightmare and a half...they're female see. I feel bad for doing so but it just saves me a ton of hassle, as they live far away.

theyre awesome! you move ur finger on the screen at IT MOVES! :O

dad is getting one next month... hopfully i'll be able to get his ipod touch :D

It's one of the best MP3 players on the market (even though such popularity causes the usual public revolt) and not everyone cares for the highest of specs or finest of audio quality. Even the latter can sometimes exist in people's imaginations.

I'm not exactly Apples No. 1 fan, but I went through about 3 different MP3 players (don't want to use my phone as that would eat its already meagre battery life), and eventually succumbed and bought a 3rd gen nano.

Admittedly I use a pair of replacement headphones as the Apple ones are pants, but the overall product is simply superb. Battery life is around a week for me (use it for about 1.5 hours a day), and its UI is just better than any other that I tried, as is the basic interface on the device.

It's annoying, but Apple do make either the or one of the best players on the market. It's just a shame it's also a fashion item as it means people who feel they should always be savvy refuse to believe in the UI is so much better than rivals.

Sound quality is a different matter, but really, personally wth a pair Sennheiser CX300 II's, my MP3s sound just fine (I'm sure a Sony or whatever would sound a tiny bit better), but at the end of the day, these are just MP3s that I listen to while walking down a busy high-street.

iTunes and the Music store are a huge part of the iPod experience, it's the reason why other excellent hardware failed to make it big in this market, it was just too difficult for most people to use (people who don't use computers a lot such as parents). iTunes may not be the nicest piece of software but it does what it says and makes it easy to manage your music collection and buy music.

You seriously don't get ipods!?! After what, 8 years?!

If i go shopping for a music player I'm not really interested in specs... because it's a music player. Being able to play music is priority... anything else is a bonus.

The problem is that every phone I have ever used that advertises itself as a music player is a pig to use which just takes any joy out of it.

Apple have just got it right, it couldn't be better IMO.

Get her an ipod:D soon you will understand.

This ^

It's cool to hate Apple though. :(

I don't 'get' Nanos necessarily, but the latest classic iPods with genius are excellent.

160 GB, 40 hours battery life.

Roll on Christmas day :D
