What am i "missing" about ipods?

easy to use, decent quality through good headphones, durable, and real ipods have a decent amount of space.
My ipod video lasted me 5 years, it's only just broken completely and it's been used every day either on the bus or in the car, at parties, walking about. They're good bits of kit.

I couldn't live with less than 30gb's of music space considering the amount of music I have on my pc, and nowadays 160gb is the biggest I can get in a reasonable sized package. They're cheaper than the fancy ones so i'll have that.

I think the real question is why don't geeks get iPods?

They are stylish, something the IT industry never seemed to appreciate yet Apple got the nail on the head. Consumers don't want 'nerdy' gadgets they wan't 'cool' gadgets. I'd say design and appearance plays an instrumental role in my decision to buy electrical gadgets. Given the choice between two TVs if one was technically worse (within reason, let's imagine a slightly inferior contrast ratio as opposed to something more drastic like 720p against 1080p) but looked awesome I'd buy that without a doubt.

For all the people that hate itunes, http://www.getsharepod.com/

I was against ipod to start with went through many different mp3 players prior to me getting an ipod, a xen, some archos device, and a flash one... All of them paled in comparison, nothing can beat the ipod that I've used, and I in all honesty cannot think of leaving the house without it, I have an 80gb, filled to 60gb, pretty much all of my most listened music on there.

i hate my ipod, its battery life was a let down to what i expected - i know they advertised 'at best' but mines frankly shocking.
Its a shame I left my rio carbon by the window while it rained.. now that was a beast of an mp3 player.

And ipod earphones are crap, whoever said that obviously has never had a decent set of earphones, im talking about any real branding £20+ ones.

I don't know if its been mentioned, but I've found Apple to be the best tech support ever (when devices have a hardware issue). Assuming that you are still under warranty just book an appointment, pop into the Apple store and it will be sorted there and then either via repair or replacement.

I had 2 iPhone 3Gs swapped out pretty much on the spot and all it cost me was my train ticket.

people come into our shop and ask for an ipod even though what they really mean is they want an mp3 player! (i dont particularly like ipods either)

a lot of people not in the know, define a portable music player as an ipod.

I think someone else in this thread already mentioned this but up until fairly recently most portable music players were referred to as walkmans even though that specifically refers to a Sony product.

You transcode. I hope thats lossless formats or your wrecking your files.

Personally I think WMP is a dog. I dunno how people use it.

Proprietary formats never made any sense. If you use lossless, as least you won't lose any SQ if you have to transcode.

I don't use iTunes, I prefer MediaMonkey. But you can use iTunes with multiple devices and much larger libraries than that. So I don't see the problem.
Although transcode makes not a huge amount of sense in where I put it (:p) I did mean transcode... from the CD... So I copy the song from the "lossless" CD to an mp3 or WMA. The reason I do WMA (although occasionally) is because it is widely accepted (except by apple...) and better quality than mp3s.

Today I accidentally called my sansa clip+ a "walkman thingy". Made me feel so old :/

They do review iPods as well, but the fact of the matter is that they aren't good enough.

They do? where? I couldn't't find any. Their review section is organised by brand. Apple isn't listed. Their own search on iPod or Apple returned nothing. I found a review of iTunes and a Shuffle vs Clip comparision. Maybe I'm just not getting the navigation of something.

I don't dispute Sony X series, and the Sansa Clip/Fuze are pretty much top dog for SQ at the moment. The others I don't know know that well as they don't get mentioned that much on head fi. Some seem to rate them highly, but not everyone. That doesn't mean that all iPods are bad. There are still decent players, well some of them anyway.

If you are going to use transcoding for ripping, then you'll just confuse everyone.

Love my iPod classic. i get all my music on there and i can port video through the telly here or in america as easy as pie. battery last ages, tunes sound good, everyone knows how to use it if it's at a party, and iTunes is passable to get music on to it.

I use it through a 1000w PA for music in-between my bands sets and it sounds fine.

Generally i avoid apple but just does the job so well.
