What am i "missing" about ipods?

Had many mp3 players over the years none of them have ever been ipods, overpriced, underspecced and overhyped.

Why would I want to untick thousands of songs when I can just drag the 12 I want? If you have to untick every song you don't want then it sounds like your way is far more unintuitive to mine. How much music do you have by the way? Maybe iTunes is easier if you don't have much music?
I have playlists in itunes called things like 'Paul's iPhone' and some specific ones like 'Talk radio' where I download podcasts into that then automatically sync when I plug the iPhone in. If you use playlists it's as good as drag and drop imo, and better when you consider things like genius.

It's just cool to hate Apple / itunes.

I've owned lots of ipods, and other mp3 players and have found that the ipods are the best I've used.

The sound quailty is good, esp in the later models if you have a nice pair of ear phones.

iTunes is great, simple, quick, looks nice and makes sorting my music and syncing it easy and quick.

I'm just one of those people who hates all things Apple. Maybe sort of a reverse fanboy, but I just refuse to be ripped off for simplistic gadgets whose performance is underwhelming.

Can you give an example of a product that you feel is simplistic and has underwhelming performance and then list a viable alternative in that price bracket with the same or better features?

Im not saying you wont be able to, I just want to see which products you are referring to in particular.

Skyfall how can you possibly say that if none of them have ever been ipods? You have no comparison to make....

Why do I have an iPod? Not had any hassles with it, it does what I want and need, and I use it. Simple really.

As an iPhone/iPod owner I do wonder why people who don't like them are so obsessed with them, why does it bother you so much?

I couldn't do without an iPod because that's all that works well in my cars, there is nothing better on an e46 BMW or Z4 than an Intravee and iPod adapter. I'd gladly buy another make if they would work as well in the cars. Half of the problem is that there just isn't the support for any other brands of MP3 player.

Example, I add a new CD to my iTunes library. I later want said music on my iPod. I plug my iPod into my Mac, iTunes automatically opens, adds music to my iPod and then automatically makes my iPod safe for disconnecting should I choose to do so without me having to make a single mouse click or keystroke.

How is that not easier or more intuitive than having to arse around with folders and files?

(never used ipod software) So any cd you put in the machine is automatically ripped to your harddrive, then copied over to the ipod when you next plug it in?

It's not that i'm "bothered", i just don't understand the "doubling up" of having an mp3 device, then wanting another one.

Well for me personally the accessory availability is what sells me the iPod/iPhone. I can select/search playlists/artists/whatever via the steering wheel controls in my car. There is nothing else out there to compete with it on this front. If you are just using it as a simple walkman type device then yes I don't really see the point either in having more than a phone that can play MP3s.

Well recently I sat on my mp3 player so was looking for a replacement. Had up to 50 quid to spend. I wanted something small and robust with good sound quality.

Going to 1 store it looked like I had 2 options:

for 45 I could get a 2gb iPod shuffle with no screen, no FM radio, forced to use crappy ipod headphones with integrated control..and what people say is mediocre sound quality. I wouldn't class myself as a hardcore audiophile but I am picky about good SQ.

for 49.99 I could get an 8gb Sansa Clip+ with a screen and great onboard controls, FM radio, 4 times the internal memory, expandable miniSD memory, I can use quality headphones that I already own, and sound output on the Sansa clip is supposed to be unmatched when compared with others in the same pricerange.

I'm not particularly in to Apple's products by any means. However my 80GB Classic has been my faithful little companion over the past couple of years. Initially I selected it because it was simply the cheapest high capacity player available. Nonetheless the sound quality is fine (admittedly with aftermarket earphones), it never misses a beat and it allows me to take my entire music collection around with me (which was what I was after all along). Yes Apple do make you jump through hoops a bit in order to get music on the thing, but it's hardly a massive inconvenience.

It's more the inconvenience of trying to reverse that. Currently with the Creative I plug it into nigh on any PC and I have a removable drive with all my music available. With iPods its a damn sight harder to get the music off it. There is a 3rd party util that does it but it's still an inconvenience. Also when you install iTunes it installs Quicktime, etc. which I just don't want. I find the software very cumbersome and prefer to just drag and drop from Windows.

M.

You don't need Quicktime, it's optional. In iTunes there's a checkbox that allows you to use the iPod as a storage device. So you can indeed get music off of your iPod without any 3rd party software whatsoever. And it's drag and drop, by browsing to My Computer and then the device, the same as all the other audio players.

To answer SB118's question, you can set iTunes to do several different things when an audio CD is inserted. You can have it either just play, have it copy to the library and auto eject when it's done, or you can just have it do nothing. My experience is that when I put an Audio CD into my computer I want it to rip the tracks to my library, which is what it does. Once that's done it'll sync my iPod with the iTunes library, thus copying the new songs from my library into my iPod and I have to do nothing at all during this process.

Much more trouble free I think than having to manually manage all of my media. And also, as said on the previous page why would some buy a 160GB iPod classic for example and then want to only have 12 songs on there?

It's called a playlist. Use it.

Except that it seems to manage the library by having a hidden directory filled with a bunch of folder names like F01 with 4 letter file names in each, presumably with a database managing mappings between files and songs.

For example, on my iPod:

E:\iPod_Control\Music\F01\BSWG.mp3

This is on a 30gig 5th gen iPod though, maybe they've stopped doing that now with new ones and it's simply kept the format for historical reasons.

You managed to pick one of the apple products that I hate, I have one of the old 2gb shuffles for running (clip on thing bought with discount), but I have to agree the new ones suck ass. Mainly because of the inline remote screwing up everything that made the old one decent.

Apple never have done the lower tier price brackets very well though.

The 1st generation shuffle is a great sounding player, one of the best. The 2nd isn't and neithers the third. They've also made less simple and more awkward to use each time and the SQ is worse. Where as the Clip is great, and does everything well that the Shuffle does badly.
