What are external Seagates like?

Hello,

Hopefully in September some time when I have enough money I'll be going for 2x 250GB WD AAKS in RAID 0 and a 500GB external hard drive so I can have the following setup:

250GBx2 RAID 0: OS, Installs etc.

500GB internal: Music, pictures, videos, downloads, everything important from installs hard drive (Firefox settings, game saves etc.)

500GB external: manual mirror of the above using Acronis or similar software. Having this drive external will protect me from PC failure in case something like the PSU goes and takes out components for whatever reason...

Manually backing up the 500GB will also protect me from software error, so if I screw up then I've got the external backup.

The above setup will allow me to reinstall Windows any time very easily, store a lot of media etc. and be 100% safe from data loss ;)

Anyway, to get to the point:

How good are the Seagate FreeAgent drives for what I want to do? I'd like to keep it on 24/7 so I can set scheduled backups, so it'll need to keep itself cool and quiet.

Thanks,
Craig.

Recently got one of these for my Mum so she can back stuff up, and it seems nice. Very quiet, can't hear it working, and looks very cool too.

Cool cool.

Has it got any kind of standby settings? I don't think externals like being on 24/7 due to no fans... I guess it depends on what make it is.

Hi i just got a 320gb seagate freeagent from a well known high street electronics store for £59.99 and its superb, very quiet and has auto power on and off.

I contemplated having the Seagate 500 gig external, but I did read a few post where they said that they got really really hot after a bit..

I dont know if its just them or not but I know someone who has one and he said it runs perfectly fine with no heat issues whatsoever.

In the end I bought me a Seagate 750 Gig internal and put it into an Antec caddy..

Runs beautifully cool.

Doesnt look much to look at but at least it works.

If the drive has auto power off/on then I guess heats should be alright for me.

A "map" could come in handy.
