What are my rights when my company relocates ?

OK then lets assume that its 80 miles further away, now what do you all think ?
Tough **** we moved deal with it doesnt really work does it.

It is the principle that I am discussing. If it only 12 miles travel and only 20 mins/day extra then they should have problem covering the small increase in costs

As I said before, if we moved 30 miles or something then I'd consider it. You cant argue over the principle, otherwise I's ask would you expect an increase if we moved 1 mile away? As I also said, if the business moves closer to your house would you expect to be paid less because your costs have reduced? I doubt it.

I'm pretty generous as an employer. This year I've:

Bought staff that wanted them iPhones and paid off their old mobile contracts

Lent one member of staff £1500 interest free to buy a mountain bike as it was over the Goverment scheme limit.

Paid for everyone to go on a VXR Trackday later this month.

But if someone in the OP's situation turned round and asked for more money to cover an extra 12 miles a day I'd consider them to be well and truly taking the **** and would most defintiely recommend that they are living beyond their means and should be running a cheaper car.

That is indeed generous, I hope that I get kind manager one day :)

Where do you work, if you don't mind me asking?

I agree with Sagalouts' logic. Of course the miles do rack up but owning an S3 and asking for compensation on fuel is arguable.

the op should realize that if he has only been with a company a month and now starts whining that he has a extra 6 miles to drive he's not gonna last very long with that job.

just speaking from experience... managers / directors like workers who get on with the job (even if it is a whole 6 miles further) and don't whine constantly about anything they don't like

not having a go here, just what I have noticed from last 20 odd years errr working :)

even if you do have rights,. to call in on them and start quoting them will lead to you finding another job.

Well said.

Quietly goes back to his comfortable Public Sector job. *whistles* :D

If you've been working for a company for <6 months they can pretty much do what they like.

It takes me 45 mins to do my 14 mile journey every day.. And thats on a good day!

used to take me 30 - 45 mins to do ~3 miles on way home

yes it would have been easier to bike or walk which i did do sometimes. but i was lazy :D

anyone whos lived in boro will know the road. think theres 30+ sets of traffic lights

OP blatantly needs a car that does better MPG imo. i dont see why work should cover it

My place of work moved about 5 miles, roughly 6 years ago, iirc there is a limit before they have to offer any sort of compenstion and it is quite a distance.
Everyone received an extra £50 for the first year, not that the company had to.
Its just one of those things, sucks that it happens.

A lot of assumptions and opinions in this thread.

Can everyone please get off there high horse for a second.
There is no need for everyone to be nasty to each other like they are doing I am sure speaking IRL you wouldn't be as aggressive as you are on here, now that being said.

I didnt kick up a fuss I asked reasonably what could be done.
I bought my S3 when i lived 1.5 miles from where i worked and earned £2k a year more my situation has changed now (redundancy) I may need to evaluate the car situation in the near future but for now I am going to suffer for a while in order to keep it.

What i asked for at the start of this thread is my legal stance not your opinion on wether I am right or wrong, it si quite obvious from this thread that half the camp feel I am in the wrong and half the camp feel I am right to ask for compensation for more outgoings.

I am fully aware of both sides of the arguement even before i approached my manager and am also aware of the consequences of kicking up a stink about what is probably a trivial matter would do after such a short term in employment. I am also aware that choosing to drive a performance vehicle means I pay more and I would also be happy with being offered SOME of the extra cost, hell I have already said i would still stay there if they gave me nothing.

Some of you have suggested that i ask the question and see what the result is, well if you had read my first post you would see that is what I have already done.

Now please could someone help me out here on my legal posistion

[EDIT] for those of you in the camp of OP should buy a new car why ? lets say i drove a car which returned a normal 35MPG (especially on the road I drive loads of hills) its still gonna be ~£45 extra per month should I still foot that extra money even though I drive a "normal" car ?

It's already been said, you have no rights.

You might want to re-do your calculations.

32 miles per day x 20 days per week = 640miles

640 / 26mpg = 24.6 gallons

44 miles per day x20 = 880miles

880 / 36mpg = 24.4 gallons

You would be paying less than you are paying now even with the extra 12 miles per day.

Seriously man, your not going to last very long in work with that attitude.

If I was an employer and some new start threatened me with legal mumbo jumbo I'd get rid of him so fast he wouldn't know what hit him.

I'd tell you this in RL face to face also... it's just the way 'work' errr works :), you don't seem to understand

btw, this is not the sue everyone country that is the USA (yet), and all your gonna do is end up at job centre.

The company where I work, have just announced an 8 mile move up the road to merge with another part of the company. There has been an Integration team setup. This is to co-ordinate the move and to take aboard peoples concerns with the move etc. Aparently when they moved into the building, about 20 years ago, people were paid a one off relocation package.

While I was in their office the other day, they were going through some of the question slips people had put in the box.

  • With the event of Global warming, has it been taken into account that Portsmouth maybe flooded and the site submerged under water.

  • There are a few large hills between here and the new site. Do the local council regularly grit the roads and cycle paths during the winter months.

:confused::confused::p
